INTER-NASAL MASK QUESTION

Post by AngieM » Sat Nov 18, 2006 6:57 pm

I use Nasalaire II, a "mask" that goes in your nostrils... I believe it's called "pillows," a strange name. Anyway. I thought it was less cumbersome and fewer straps, seems comfortable enough, BUT I heard that after a while of using, your nostrils will get larger and your nose distorted. Is that true? Can anyone tell me what you like or don't like about inter-nasal equipment, please? My nostrils are a bit swollen when I wake, but eventually get back to normal after a while. I would not want to have them permanently huge, though! Please advise!

I sometimes get "PIG NOSE" from my nasal interface, that usually means I have the mask too tight or I slept on my face...........I doubt very strongly this can become permanent......after all they told me as a child, because i crossed my eyes at everyone they would stay that way,,,,,,,,they didn't........also i don't see alot of blind little boys.....if you know what I mean.........all rumors to make us stop doing stuff.........

I've heard that the nose and ears continue to keep growing bigger as you get older.

......ever see an old man with tiny ears?

Hi Angie,

The Nasal Aire II is called a "prongs" interface, not a "pillows" interface. The prongs or cannulas do have to be crammed into the nostrils to hold a seal. The inside rims of the nostrils help hold the prongs in place, thus the need for a very snug fit with prongs.

Pillows interfaces (e.g. Breeze, Twilight NP, ComfortLite 2) rely more on the headgear to hold the pillows at place, more on the outside and against the nostrils than "in" them.

Only a small bit of the open tip of pillows have to actually be inside the nostrils. Prongs have to be shoved in a lot more.

Hope you get good, effective treatment. An interface that's comfortable enough to sleep in is a big key to being able to stick with this kind of treatment.

I don't think you have to worry about permanently misshaping your nostrils using the NA II...or any other prongs or pillows interfaces.

When I was about six years old, I asked my Great-Uncle, "Why don't you have any hair?"

He replied: "Because my mother made me brush it too much when I was a small boy".

I was scared of hair brushes for years...lol..' '

Angie,

I understand what you are saying, about your fears about your nose growing with the Nasal Aire II.

I remembered reading some post so I looked some up.

I do not know if my nares got bigger in just a few weeks. But the opennings look bigger and rounder.

I am not ready to stop using the NA II. Time will tell. I tried to many interfaces before I got to the NA II, to start over again.

The article you posted on chat last night was intresting.

OK-I use the Oracle-so I wake up in the morning with the "pig nose" from nose plugs shoved up my nostrils all night and I look like I've been through Botox gone bad-my lips are HUGE in the morning. Thank goodness both of these effects only last about 15 minutes. But I,too, have wondered if the nose plugs are stretching my nostrils. I guess time will tell.

It is too bad those big lips go away in 15 minutes. If there were a way to keep them plump the Oracle could replace many, many bad plastic surgeries to increase lip size. That could be a good thing.

than to AVOID being down the road from non-compliance.

Isn't everything going to be somewhat enlarged, droopy and wrinkled eventally anyway?

Or, to paraphrase Johnny Cochran: If the interface fits, you must commit...

(to treatment).

At least, commit until the PERFECT mask comes along to replace what is working for you now.

Pig-nose comes from masks that go up like a pillow smushing against the nose. You cannot make the nose bigger. The "stent" only lasts wile your wearingthe device.
