Back pain on nights with good sleep

Post by biztraveler » Sun Dec 16, 2018 6:48 am

I’m a few months into therapy, using a DreamStation APAP. I rarely sleep more than 6 hours, which hasn’t been an issue for me (better than sleeping 10 hours and still feeling exhausted). However, last night I slept about 7.5 hours and woke up with some awful back pain. I’m completely out of shape and I’m not discounting that, but this seems to happen on the rare nights where I sleep for 7+ hours. I read in some other threads that this could be due to extremely restful sleep w/CPAP, where I don’t move for the entire night. I am a stomach sleeper, in case that makes any difference. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? I don’t feel like I’ve changed my sleep position significantly since I started CPAP.

Sorry about your discomfort. One incident of pain does not indicate a problem. If the pain reoccurs or persists, pursue a solution. I hope that you feel better.

Thanks for responding. I should’ve made it more clear - this has happened several times. I should also mention that this never happened before I started CPAP.

How old are you?
Any history of arthritis?

Sometimes it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation going on.
You sleep so soundly that you don't move around which is what we normally do to relieve pain from staying in one position too long.
And if you do move around a lot then that means your sleep quality isn't so great and you aren't sleeping soundly.

Ideally you figure out why it hurts so much to stay in one position so long and remove the cause.....easier said than done.
Been there and done that myself.

I’m 33 - sometimes I feel old, but I don’t think I qualify :D. No arthritis.

How long does it take the pain to go away in the morning and what do you do to help it go away...if anything?

Have you tried side sleeping at all?

It takes maybe an hour to go away. It’s in the mid & lower back.

Are you using a memory foam mattress and how old is it? How old is whatever type you use? And have you gained even a little weight lately?

I'm also a 'front' sleeper so have learned a few things over time.

Not a memory foam — standard coil. Mattress is probably 6-7 years old. Weight has been steady for the last year or so.

Have you ruled out aerophagia? Definitely muscle pain?

Other than that Provigil/Modafinil can "cause" back pain.
Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"
