Dry/Burning Eyes

Post by ColdWarVet » Wed Dec 05, 2018 6:10 pm

I have been using the ResMed 10 for about 18 months. I have good nights and bad nights, mostly good. My eyes seem to be burning. I use the ResMed F-20 Medium. I have had issues with leaks or it moving up and exposing my mouth. I’ve tried a large which is too big. The center gave me a F&P Simplus. It’s an older style. More of a pain. I go back next week. The eye situation makes me feel tired. Becoming frustrated.

Look at all the diff. masks for comparison on cpap.com - pix, reviews, lots more... and use artificial tears before bed and/or in the a.m. til you get straightened out because air must be leaking into your eyes from the mask... very common but a bad idea if not addressed. Just a tip - the 'Total Face Mask" might seem like a good idea but is known to leak a lot compared to most others.

Thanks! When I get up I am on a train platform to take a train into the city. My eyes water so much, it is like I am crying. My last eye exam found the beginning of small cataracts. I am wondering if one is possibly causing the other? Maybe a CPAP pillow... go blind or die of a heart attack?

Not familiar with the F20 mask but I started out on the F&P simplus but gave it up because of leaks and air blowing in eyes. I tried all sorts of solutions to no avail. I finally tried an Amara View and have no problems with it. It has its problems, but blowing in eyes doesn't seem to be one of them for me.

We know what the mask looks like - not the point though. It's important that it fit YOU properly when lying down and the machine's on... whether or not air blows into your eyes. Whichever of the very many masks out there fit others well is not going to help YOU necessarily.

However, from what you said re the train platform etc, I would definitely check with your eye doctor to be sure nothing else is going on coincidentally. Your symptoms may be due to another problem and you don't want to fool around with your eyes.

And I’m even showing no issues with leaks?

Have your eye doctor do a check on the ducts from the nasal passages to the eye area.
Normally they should remain closed but sometimes they don't and air in the nasal passageway can sneak up into the eyeball area and dry out the eye.
While the most common cause of dry eye with cpap is mask leak...it's not impossible to have a problem with those little ducts letting area get from the nasal passageway to the eyeball.

Get it checked out.

Now as for it causing cataracts...doubt it...my husband had bad cataracts and got them fixed and never used cpap in his whole life.
I have been using cpap for over 9 years now....not a hint of a cataract yet....and I am 66 years old.

My cataracts started showing up long before I started using my bi-level machine. I had cataracts removed from both eyes before I ever started treatment for my sleep apnea.
