[Advertisement] CPAP Study in Melbourne Australia

Post by ashalenko » Sat Jun 09, 2018 7:50 pm

Hey all, how are we?

I'm conducting a study for my psychology honours thesis and was hoping you could all help me out with recruiting participants.

This study is only being conducted in Melbourne, Australia.

The study is looking at the effects of Panax Ginseng (a common herbal medicine) on daytime sleepiness and cognitive performance in people with obstructive sleep apnoea using CPAP.

Mods if I am violating any rules, I apologise, but I was unable to contact anybody through PM as the site would not allow me.

So if you, or anybody you know has moderate-to-severe OSA and would like to participate, or you have any questions, please contact me on either 0456 249 099 or email osa.study@rmit.edu.au.

The study does run over a period of 5 weeks, which I know is a lot to ask, but participants are reimbursed $50 for their time and only 3 hours of this time period are spent in testing.

Thank you.

If you smoke it, and then properly use a XPAP unit, your Sleep Apnea will be better, even more so if you don't smoke it. Jim

Clever ruse for student to lay hands upon quantities of an herbal supplement?

This is a CPAP forum, not a forum for alternative elixirs. Bye bye.

I let the post through after some thought.
I figured I would let any forum members living in the Melbourne area decide if they wanted to participate and/or check it out.
Someone might be interested.

From the way I read it that it wasn't for the supplements effects instead of cpap use but with cpap use.

Maybe I read it wrong...but that's why I said I would let any the forum member in Melbourne decide on the particulars.

Lord knows we have enough people using cpap who still are having excessive sleepiness issues and poor sleep and trying all sorts of stuff to help while using cpap. One of our major complaints is no real studies to back up claims with cpap in the picture.
Here's someone doing a study on people with documented OSA....
so here it is something we ask for and now we blast them because it may have monetary connections.....hey, at least it's getting done.

+1

Always amazes me when people (always the same people) are so immediately cynical.

I had no idea this ended up being approved sorry, didn't get any notification.

Yeah this is definitely not a trial to treat OSA with Ginseng alone. CPAP is still the gold standard when it comes to treating OSA. However, a significant proportion of CPAP users still report daytime sleepiness and reduced cognitive performance. So there is a need for an adjunct therapy to treat these symptoms. There is clinical research that shows that Ginseng can improve cognitive performance in a variety of domains, but it has never been tested in OSA patients. This trial will look to see whether Ginseng can a) Reduce daytime sleepiness associated with residual daytime sleepiness despite CPAP use and b) Improve cognitive performance as a result of residual daytime sleepiness despite CPAP use.

Thank you.

Yeah part of my literature review was looking at research on CPAP and how it doesn't completely normalise the patients daytime sleepiness, which is why adjunct therapy is needed. Whilst modafinil exists, it is associated with undesirable side effects so an alternative adjunct therapy is required.

Yes a Ginseng company is supplying the Ginseng, but it's only for an honours thesis and I will be completely objective and unbias.

I really think that even though this forum is called "CPAPtalk," the scope should be broad enough to discuss alternatives and supplements to CPAP. Image a newbie being told "use CPAP (and CPAP only) or get lost!"

Cynicism is necessary, with the proliferation of "woo" for PROFIT.
Most traditional medicine was (traditionally) the only thing available, thus it was used--
WHERE it was found.
Most exotic botanicals only grow in limited locales.
Panax ginseng, as I understand, is not cheap, and most cannot grow it at home.

Please don't make that statement anywhere in your thesis. It could earn you an automatic fail. You will try, as in do your best, to be as objective and unbiased as you can be. You can never truthfully promise more than that.

Kudos to Pugsy for letting it through.

Finally said something I can agree on. But, we do need things to poo poo and laugh at and run down too. If we didn't allow that, what would we do to fill the gap. The bad thing it doesn't last long enough, I have to go out get some stones, by the time I get back, it's over. I don't really agree, I'll just have to store some stones nearer to my computer. Jim

Basically, blind trust in pseudo science, manufactured "statistics", or charismatic front people.
In the absense of actual facts.

I believe they are using it as short for woo-woo.
