Is Cheyne-Stokes Occasionally OK?

Post by jeffwpb » Sat Jun 16, 2018 1:39 pm

Just moved from a non-auto machine without a lot of data capability that was set at a constant 8 cmH2O. Kept getting higher and higher AHI, near 20 most nights, and started to move pressure up a little, but too timid to move it a lot. So, I recently bought an AirSense 10 Autoset to allow pressures to float to see if AHI could be reduced. Started on May 31, and used Sleepyhead to look at data in a lot more detail than I had seen before. The first night got a segment of Cheyne-Stokes, which I had never heard of before, and had never shown up in any sleep study. I started reading a little bit and it seems associated with health issues that I don't think I have. It did not occur again so I chalked it up to the first night with a new machine and I had also left the machine at the default 4-20 range. Based upon various posts here and other places, I was trying to narrow the range to close in on consistent response, and last night got another segment of C-S. So my question is, does this just occur occasionally, is it related to just collecting more data from this machine, or is this something that I will need to find a new sleep doctor (recently moved and have not selected a new doctor yet) to discuss with soon? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Charts are zoomed in first, and then the overall for the same night.

Last night's flagged CSR time doesn't look as real as the first night.
Plus with last night there is some time flagged that probably isn't really CSR. It looks sort of like it because of the waxing and waning of the air flow but the flow between the breaths isn't nearly as flat as it need to be for it to be real CSR.

The machine is making an educated guess based on the waxing and waning of the air flow.
It's not 100% accurate the real deal CSR breathing.
Even if it was you aren't having enough of it to be all that scary or alarming.
No, I don't think you need a new doctor.

This person (see image below) has a problem and it's real and a lot more of it. You are a long way from this person but if it concerns you too much then do mention it to your doctor at your next visit. I get CSR flagged time every now and then about like yours...it's sometimes obviously not real CSR and occasionally might look sort of real. I don't worry about it.
