Wake up every hour

Post by goodat62 » Thu May 24, 2018 3:43 am

I wake up every hour to pee, but I don't pee much at all. I'm 5'7" and weigh 260, so I know I need to lose some weight, but what else can I do? My machine's presure is set at 16.

welcome, goodat62! i'm not bad at 64, myself. :)

the experts here are going to need more info before they can offer up any advice. first, could you tell us what machine and mask you are using? there is a plethora of both machines and masks. not everyone here uses the same brand or type. if you could, when you have time, go to the control panel and fill in the info.

for now, just tell us what you are using. that way, folks can give you more precise answers.

how long have you been on cpap?

did you wake up often before you started cpap?

other than waking up every hour, how is the quality of your sleep?

and i'm sure there will be more questions to answer before your through!

good luck and someone will be along shortly with advice....
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Are you male or female?
How old are you?
How often do you have to pee when awake?

When you have time please add your equipment to your profile.
wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile

Hopefully you have a machine that is full data and works with available software so you can see if your sleep apnea therapy is optimized or not.

Nocturia can of course be caused by sleep apnea not being well treated but there are also other potential culprits.
Rule out your cpap therapy effectiveness first and then start looking elsewhere if your therapy looks good.

I'm a 62 years old male, who's been suffering from sleep apnea for many years. I use a Respironics Dream Station and my mask is Air fit F10. I pee a few drops every time I wake up, but it a very small amount. I'm over weight and I know that has is a big contributing factor. How long do most people sleep while using CPAP machines?

Depends on the person ...

What Dreamstation are you using, what are your pressure settings?

Which model DreamStation (there's a lot of possibilities) and if you don't know the model name tell us the model number which is on a sticker on the bottom of the blower...it starts with DSX....

How often do you have to pee during the day?

Have you had your prostate checked lately?

I can sleep all night without having to get up and pee when I use the cpap machine.
If I didn't use the cpap machine I would have to get up and pee about every 2 hours and my bladder would be painfully full each time.

When sleep apnea is the cause of nocturia it is because the apnea events cause stress on the heart and when the heart is stressed it releases a little stress hormone called ANP and when that stress hormone goes through the kidneys as part of the filtering process it causes the kidneys to work harder and what happens when the kidneys work harder....urine gets produced.

I would expect you to be reporting more of a full bladder thing if sleep apnea was the cause of your nocturia and not peeing a small amount but I suppose it wouldn't be impossible.
Sometimes it's more out of habit that we get up and pee than it is a full bladder thing...we wake up for some reason and decide "I am awake I might as well go pee" as opposed to waking up because the bladder is painfully full.

If you have an enlarged prostate...it can also cause men to have to pee often and in small amounts despite feeling like it is full.
So there are other potential causes but you need to rule out the possibility that your sleep apnea is being poorly treated first.

We need to know model name because not all DreamStation models have data available to help you full evaluate your therapy effectiveness.

I agree with seeing a urologist. It could be an\ bladder infection, enlarged prostate or even prostate cancer. I had the latter. :(

There is life after getting this treated though.

My machine is a Dream Station CPAP Hum Core Pack Dom. I have it set at CPAP 16. I just had my physical and my prostate was a bit enlarged but the doctor didn't seem concerned. I do pee frequently and have been for years, but you're right, I think peeing during the night is more out of habit because I'm awake any way. Hope this helps.

No, the unit is about 1.5 years old, and I believe it's has all the functions that's out there, so what should I look at?

I think the brick version but it may have some very limited details available on the LCD screen.
It may or may not work with SleepyHead if it shows anything at all beyond hours of use.

To the OP....
All I know to do is try SleepyHead and start from there.

Also go to the apneaboard and request the clinical manual so a person can go into the clinical setup menu and see if there is an option for "show AHI" which would let whatever (if anything) it gathers show up on the LCD screen.
https://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap- ... tup-manual

At best it is going to be a half assed brick...showing a generic AHI (no category breakdown) and maybe a total leak average.

Knowing the AHI would be a big help though...if it is nice and low then we can rule out sub optimal therapy as a cause of the nocturia.

I personally sleep until I wake up... and that varies, just like before i got a cpap.
