Many posters have stated that the doctor does not need the card, as he can get the information electronically from the DME provider.
I called the office and finally got a good answer. This doctor sees multiple patients who have different insurance providers, including some out-of-state patients and some diplomats who have foreign insurance. Therefore, there are multiple DMEs involved, and some who got their CPAPs from mail order, they ask everybody for the card, which works for everybody who has a data-capable CPAP (even if no modem was provided).

The doctor gets the information from the manufacturer's site (Resmed or Phillips). They know what machine they prescribed. The modem is included by the manufacturer.
Since it is a followup visit and they have your records they know you are not foreign.

That assumes that he's the prescriber. It also presumes that the patient got the CPAP from a "regular" DME, not from Craigslist or secondwindcpap[dot]com. Additionally, a lot of his patients have other brand CPAPs, especially F&P. He does see diplomats from the various consulates and missions that are in New York. Many of them got their CPAPs abroad and they're equipped with modems that don't work in the U.S.prodigyplace wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 3:45 pmThe doctor gets the information from the manufacturer's site (Resmed or Phillips). I'd rather have my doctor read my card. First that's an indication that the doctor CAN read the card and CARES enough to read the card--he knows what he's doing. Second, I don't trust DME's with my data and some even charge to give you your data.

Actually my DME continues to monitor compliance to justify sending supplies. However, that varies depending on insurance and on state law. Remember that some patients live in other states (especially NJ & CT), and some have diplomatic health coverage.
