Why do new companies come out with CPAPs only

Post by Janelle » Wed Mar 09, 2005 2:21 am

The company manufacturing the Aura mask and CPAP have some great innovative ideas. Wouldn't all of us love to have a rechargable battery integrated into our units? But why do these companies always come out with only CPAPs? Why can't they come out with APAPs first?

I'm supposing the CPAPs are easier to make, whereas the APAPs require certain algorithms and such.

What are the statistics from CPAP.com on the number of CPAPs versus APAPs ordered each year? Anyone know?

I think that pretty much sums it up, Janelle. R&D toward fixed pressure delivery is a no-brainer compared to that which would be required for a PAP machine designed for sleep-event detection, pressure response, patient response caveats (such as central apneas), algorithmic-based fault recovery, and so forth. My guess is that FDA requirements and certification procedures would be comparatively steep as well. For an upstart company, it probably makes more sense to simply walk well before they move on to a graceful dance or run. My guess concurs with yours...
