How long is he going? The bigger the better. A 105 amp hr deep cycle from wally world will last a week at least. At only $60. Just be sure to cycle it a few times before the trip to get its full capacity.
If money is no object get a gel battery.

CPAP.com recently added a feature to many of its machine product pages. If you enter your pressure, it'll show you how long a battery life you can expect out of each available CPAP battery.

You can buy a battery from any trailer supply deep cycle or Wally Mart

Is the gel type superior to the AGM type?

It has to be superior, is newer and more costly, it's not shaped like a shoe box.

Like the T.V. ad, run it in the demolition derby, then take it out and put it in your car to drive home. What the ad doesn't say, is you can buy two normal batteries for the same price, and drive both cars without playing switch and change. Jim

I was reading an article in MotorHome magazine about Battery life. They said that although gel battery's were good they were way too expensive for the life cycle they had and a Deep cycle acid battery would be rechargeable more often. Also look in consumer reports they had a good article about batterys a couple of issues ago. Also Check out http://www.RV.Net
They have a good forum of tech issues.
Good luck
