Mask leak rate?

Post by bucko » Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:12 am

What is the normal mask leak rate for a Simplus FFM? Using a Dreamstation APAP.

Masks used to come with the leak number. This mask says nothing about leak rate so I don't know what is normal.

Also in Sleephead, why do some of my graphs have a double line? I cannot find any info in the manual. Leak rate and Pressure

Vent rates should be included in the little paperwork that came with your mask.

Double lines....
Pressure...top line is inhale and bottom line is exhale. Usually see 2 lines when some sort of exhale relief is being using. On a Respironics machine...Flex is the exhale relief.

Leak line ...double line...the top is total leak which is the mask's expected vent/intentional leak plus any excess leak.
The bottom line was supposed to be excess only leak line but it's not terribly accurate in SH because the guy who came up with SH had a hard time figuring out how to calculate excess only leak on a Respironics machine since it never was clearly shown and the large leak boundary line moves with the pressure so there isn't a static line for comparison. So I take that bottom leak line with a grain of salt and don't bother much with it.

Usually I just tell people to look at the Events graph...see the LL at the top of the Events graph??? That's Large Leak and if no flags there then there were no times where the person went into large leak territory.
If SleepyHead is telling you that you are having so and so % of the time in large leak and you aren't seeing any large leak flags in the Events graph or the flags aren't nearly as bad as SH is making it out to be then that's because SH defaults to the ResMed large leak evaluation red line and not Respironics and we need to tell SH to use a number more in line with a Respironics large leak territory red line.

Is SleepyHead telling you are having big leaks and you aren't seeing them?
If so...this is what I tell people.
Instead the statistic reporting the % of time in large leak is based on a ResMed calculation number and that number won't work for your Respironics machine.
Open SH and go to Preferences and then the CPAP tab. SH Defaults to a red line leak threshold of 24 L/min which is a ResMed leak number...won't work with your machine. Your red line threshold number is more like 60 to 75...so change the 24 to 60- 75 or just turn off that statistic by removing the check mark.
The actual threshold number varies depending on mask and pressures used.

At the bottom of this page
https://www.fphcare.co.nz/homecare/slee ... s/simplus/
is a download link called "Simplus user instructions" pdf document.
In that document is the vent/intentional leak rate graph for the vent rate at whatever pressure is being used.
This is the same as you should have in your mask paperwork/booklet...if you have the paperwork.

Google "simplus manual" there's a pdf of the manual, the leak rate chart is in it, expected leak varies with pressure.

That said, *most* masks vent around 20lpm@4cmh2o up to around 50lpm@20cmh2o. give or take.

Top line is actual total leak, bottom line is guesstimated excess leak.
