Hi dsm,
Too much alcohol, whether from wine, beer, or distilled spirits, especially if taken close to bedtime, has the opposite effect. At first it induces sleep but later in the evening or morning it can disrupt normal sleep patterns.
Chronic alcohol drinkers have a word for it - "the night visitors" - when they find themselves wide awake half way through their sleep regimen.
I don't dispute the melatonin link, but there are other factors at play that can and do exacerbate a healthy night's sleep.

My wife is a wine drinker - was brought up from early age to have one glass of wine at dinner & still does now.
I agree wholeheartedly about imbibing largeish amounts.
I do think that CPAP helps on those nights (fri sat ?) when a social event prompts some consumption.
