Power out- will be first night without cpap

Post by Rainmom17 » Fri Dec 29, 2017 11:43 pm

Everyone says the best way to find out if cpap is working for you is to have a night without it. Well, I don't have a choice in the matter tonight, since our power went out. After 5 months, I haven't really felt a difference. Maybe tomorrow I'll realize that it has been making a difference after all.

You may want to try to sleep in a recliner if it doesn't work out in bed.

I wish you well. When the power goes out for me I stay awake... but we live in an area were the power doesn't go out for more then a day or two at a time even in the most extreme cases. If I have to stay awake for more then 36 hours I have a large deep cycle marine battery that I can use to run an old Resperonics Pro just to make sure I make it. My apnea is horrible untreated so I never sleep with out it no mater what. If we lost power for like a week I'd be screwed or looking to get a generator or something.

Take care and let us know how it went. Hang in there!

I had to do without my cpap once because some dumb ass went on a trip and forgot the long hose and I got a chance to realize just how much the machine was helping when I didn't really think it was helping all that much except for getting rid of nocturia.
I got a real rude awakening as to just how bad I could feel without cpap compared to with cpap.

Of course your sleep may be so poor because of the no power and worry and stuff that you will feel like crap because of poor sleep too.

Power ended up coming on halfway through the night, and I promptly put on my mask and went back to sleep. So kind of like a split night. Here's how it went: I fell asleep with no problem without the mask and according to my Fitbit, I got my usual amount of deep sleep and REM sleep for the whole night. All the deep sleep was without cpap. So the Fitbit graph didn't really show any difference between a full-cpap night and a half & half night. For the cpap portion, my ahi was 0.4, which is my lowest ever. But events typically happen for me earlier in the night, so who knows. My phone's sleep cycle app said I snored for 19 minutes. As to how I feel, currently I just have the usual crummy feeling I have every morning. Will see how it goes throughout the day. It's cool that Fitbit still tracks without wifi.

One night is not a trend.
Improvement is often gradual, depending on individual symptoms.
My impressions from sleeping without cpap are more pronounced,
because apnea disturbs my sleep to the point of torture.
I feel IMMEDIATE and significant effects, and will stay awake
as late as possible to avoid the misery of non-cpap "sleep".

I was wondering how come you didn't hook your XPAP to what was powering your computer. When my power goes out, i'm back to the stone age. No Wifi, I start up my tablet and check if the neighborhood's WiFi is out, that's how I know if it's just me, or the world. Jim

I used my phone to post because it still had power and used cellular data. Yup, everything else was out. We have a generator but my husband was already in bed when the power went out, and I honestly don't know how to run the generator. And since it was a pretty small outage, we hoped it wouldn't be out long.
