the stats.........what's good and what's bad ?

Post by OutbackOzy » Wed Oct 04, 2006 11:36 pm

you guys have probably answered this a fair few times.....but here goes...
did the tests, bought the gear..couple of weeks on and at least the wife is sleeping better! And I feel better too....anyway, got the software in the mail...downloaded the info....now to interpret it.....
when I was tested in the hospital I was diagnosed as mid - high (55 apneas/hr) 2nd visit with mask, they said my range was from 5 - 11..so that is what the machine is set on...
after 80 hours my averages are.... AHI 6.7... AI 0.3..HI 6.5..time in apnea 0.01%
pressure
95 percentile 11cm H20 L/sec
median...... 9.4cm H20 L/sec
maximum... 11.2 cm H20 L/sec

leak
95 percentile 0.20 L/sec
median...... 0.04 L/sec
maximum... 0.48 L/sec

ummmmmm........any help greatly appreciated
Cheers
David

They always seem to say here that an AHI of less than 5 is good.

The following answer is based on my experience only. I am NOT a
medical professional:

1) I think the first thing to concentrate on when using an APAP is the
pressure range. I would run it minimum 8, and maximum 12, for one
week. Remember the accuracy of these machines is, at best, + - one cm/H2O.
Therefore a true 5 - 11 may really be 8 -12.

2) Your leak rate is very good. Not many hose-heads see numbers that good.

3) Keep track of your AHI's, and yes, you are shooting for a less than 5 AHI.

4) Get lots of information before making any change.

+ Aussie heated hose.

well..a couple of weeks have passed...I am one of the lucky ones it seems...no real trouble sleeping ..mask is ok..headgear is really quite loose and overall I haven't had any real dramas. I am using the heated hose that doesn't seem to be heated at all and now my throat and nose seem quite normal when I wake up...
Now given these scenarios I wake each morning and download my card and try to get some meaning out of the graphs and figures. I've read many posts.AHI if they mean anything etc etc etc, setting highs and lows, humidity and all that.
I started as prescribed with a low of 5 and a top of 11.....changed that to a low of 8 and a top of 12.....changed that to a low of 5 and a top of 11 and worked on humidity...and even given that my diet must have influence I am now totally lost. A night on the wine I slept well and had AHI in the 5s...no drinking anywhere up to 9s.....another night with a few reds in the 7s...
I gave it 3 nights on each change...
At first I felt wonderful.....and the couple of nights I slept without the machine I woke wishing I hadn't.....The original figures above are still very typical
Anyway....do I just accept the 5s to 7s mostly or can someone suggest some things?
Cheers
