heated tube is cold

Hi all, my heated tubing is not warming up. The humidifier plate is warming but not the tube no matter what the setting. Does this mean I need a new tube, do they wear out? Or is there something wrong with my machine? PR system one.

This is really miserable, my poor nose is killing me, I'm just not getting any moisture.

Why not ask the DME to look at it (if you got it from a dealer)?

I may be mistaken, but I don't believe the tube itself gets warm....Only the air that travels in the tube. You say you are not getting any moisture...it the water level going down at all? How do you have the humidifier/tube set?

If the heating plate is warming up and water is being used then you are getting moisture added to the air.
All the heated hose does with the moisture laden air is warm it up and keep it maybe more comfortable in terms of temperature and prevent condensation in the hose hopefully. The heated hose has nothing to do with the amount of moisture the machine's humidifier cranks out.

Yes, heated hoses can wear out or have a wire break inside them and can need to be replaced.

Time for a new hose and if that doesn't fix the humidity problem then further detective work is needed with the machine and humidifier itself.

The only time I have been able to feel any warmth in y heated hose is when it first comes on. It will feel slightly warm for a few seconds, then I could no longer feel any heat.

The only way I could tell if my hose was heating was if my nose did NOT get cold.
Sewsleepy's hose may not be working. A bench test is indicated.

The only way I've been able to tell if my hose was working or not was whether I get rainout or not. Never feels different, even at highest heat. Right now, I know the wires are broken - I stepped on it - but I'm fine until Spring when rainout starts again. In the winter, my bedroom is the hottest despite adding a damper, but once temperatures are in the 50s, that all that changes because furnace barely runs.

I wasn't getting moisture but I went in the machine settings and turned off the heated hose and then I got a ton of moisture, I had to turn down the setting! so at least I know the humidifier is working. It's really hard to tell what's going on because I have the flu and my nose is so irritated inside. Ugh!!

ps. Is there a way to figure out for sure if my tube is heating? I usually notice that where it runs under the covers, that spot will warm up a little bit, but last night it was just stone cold.

What do you mean you got a ton of moisture when you turned off the hose?

All the hose heat does is try to reduce moisture condensing on the hose. If it's working, then no moisture condenses on the hose. It only adds just enough heat so that the tube is a little warmer than room temp, but never as warm as body temp, so it's not going to 'feel' hot.

You could put a thermometer on it, maybe.

Palerider, I had my humidity set to 4 but I was getting dry air and it was drying my nose out something awful. On my machine, the number affects the humidifier and the heated hose. So I went into the settings and turned off the heated hose (wanted to see what would happen), I fell asleep and woke up a couple hours later realizing the humidity was way too high like I was breathing steam almost lol and I turned it down to 2.

With the heated hose attached on a System One 60 series machine there are 2 settings that are independent of each other when the heated hose is attached.

The humidity setting is in the clinical setup menu....and the choices are 1 is 70%, 2 is 80% and 3 is 90%. The heated hose has to be attached when going into the clinical menu area to see these choices.

The knob on the outside with the choices of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 when the heated hose is attached is ONLY for the hose air temp.

That's the way the 60 series machines work when the heated hose is attached and the machine recognizes it.

If you didn't go into the clinical setup menu when the heated hose was attached (and recognized by the machine) then you didn't change the humidity setting when you went from 4 to 2...all you did was lower the hose air temp.
Besides...there is no setting for humidity at 4...3 is as high as it goes and that's for 90%

These settings are independent of each other. A person could select 3 (90%) for humidity and 1 for hose temp if they wanted to...and if their bedroom was cool there's a real good chance that condensation would happen. I have a PR S1 model 760...in the summer I can get by with the hose air temp of 1 and my setting of 3 for humidity but not in the winter. I get major rain out/condensation in the winter if I don't crank up that hose air temp because my bedroom gets down right cold in the winter if it is cold outside.

This humidifier offers three levels of humidification (70, 80 or 90 percent) and the heated tube has five levels of temperature available, ranging from 4 to 16 degrees above the room temperature. These two features work together to deliver the optimum humidification level at the mask.

Hi Pugsy, I did go into the clinical settings to make the changes and **thank you for explaining how the settings work** to me! After I turned off the heated hose, I assumed the control knob controlled just the humidity- no? (But if it does, do you suddenly have more humidity levels?) If there is no heated hose, or it's turned off, what does the knob do?

I have found this setup really odd and confusing ever since I got this machine! It seems like you ought to be able to adjust the humidity on the fly, without having to get up out of bed, find your glasses, and access the settings screen. (I think you can make changes to these two settings from the normal settings screen, now that I think about it, without getting into the clinical menu, but I'm not sure now, I went into the clinical one last night) And I don't understand why the heat for the hose has so many levels but only 3 for humidity! Seems like it ought to be the other way round or they should have made them the same.

Now that I am armed with your clear instructions, I'll have more confidence to make changes and test them out tonight. I set the hose to 1 and humidity to 2 and I'll see how that goes. Thank you!

With the heated hose attached the only way to adjust humidity is in the clinical setup menu.

If you want to adjust the humidity on the fly you have to use the non heated hose and then your humidity choices can be both in the clinical setup menu and controlled by the knob during the night.

Without the heated hose attached you have 2 choices for types of humidity (classic mode or the new system one mode). Classic mode works like the old machines worked without taking into account the ambient humidity...new system one mode I didn't really like because even at max of 5 it didn't seem to put out enough moisture to make my nose happy.

See how you do with humidity set to 2 (that's 80%) and the setting of 1 for hose air temp (that will warm the air 4 degrees above the ambient room temp) and see how things go. If you want warmer....it's 4 degrees per setting up to end result of 86 degrees. If your bedroom ambient temp is high...like 75 degrees to start with then it won't have to go far to reach 86 degrees. If your bedroom is like mine (usually 60 degrees or less ) then you may need a lot more heat in the hose to get the air warm enough to be comfortable during the winter.
