Any way to tell if a Central is really a Central?

Post by Rainmom17 » Sat Dec 09, 2017 10:41 am

The daily report from my machine usual shows some centrals. Often it's 2 or 3, but sometimes it's 6 or 7, and a couple times it's been 10. I've seen people on here say a lot of what is reported as centrals aren't really. Is there any way to tell from Sleepyhead if they're real or not? Should I be concerned about having 10 centrals during 7 hours of sleep? (I had no centrals during my sleep study.) Thanks!

How long are they lasting, and are they clustered together? You most likely should post up a graph so the 'gurus' can give you a better idea of whether they are significant or not, and whether they are related to SWJ.

Sometimes you can make a good educated guess as to whether a central is real or not but it takes work, time, experience and looking at a lot of flow rates zoomed in.

Even now after all these years and looking at a lot of flow rates I can't always say with 100% certainty if a flagged event is real or not.

Any flagged events right around a known awake time I pretty much chalk up to SWJ.

Remember an occasional real central is actually normal. Like a sleep onset central during sleep stage transition. They aren't a problem unless present in large numbers and bouncing a person out of sleep or causing desats.
Since it is normal to wake after a REM cycle....in theory it is also possible to have another sleep onset central when we go back to sleep after that awakening at the end of REM (we may or may not even remember the awakening).

Now some years back I had occasion to have 17 centrals flagged in 17 minutes...back to back. I never did figured out what the were from and they sure looked real to me. Never happened again either. I blamed it on the alien dudes messing with me.

I wouldn't worry about 10 centrals spread out over 7 hours..much less an even smaller number during the night.
Like what are you going to be able to do about them anyway with your machine even if every single one of them was real (which the odds are they aren't all real).

If you are thinking that the centrals are a cause for not feeling so great...not directly I wouldn't think even with 10 over 7 hours UNLESS they are a by product of poor sleep or awakenings in general...and the poor sleep or awakenings are the most likely cause of not feeling so great.
The centrals are just a symptom of the poor sleep. Either being real as in sleep onset but a lot of sleep onset happening because of repeated awakenings...or simply SWJ centrals from the awake breathing.
If this is the case then fixing the cause of the poor sleep itself would be what I would target instead of worrying about the central itself.
You can't fix centrals with your machine anyway.

Remember some meds mess with sleep architecture and/or REM which in turn messes with how we feel during the day.
As does other health conditions, pain, etc.
