Surgery needed on my Activa?

Post by Snoozing Gonzo » Thu Oct 12, 2006 10:47 am

The one thing that has bugged me about my Activa with a Standard cushion was the tightness of the top or bridge of the nose area. I believe that it led to some leaking (blowing in the eye) and certainly led to red marks and occasional soreness. The bridge of my nose is a little wide but is a bit uneven side-to-side as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and too slow in my youth. The Activa cushion seems very forgiving (in comparison with the Comfort Gel – my only comparison for a nasal mask) in addressing my structural inconsistencies - - as long as it is worn loose.

I snuck in under the Resmed price increases to purchase a Shallow cushion and got another through an auction after reading that the top area is wider. It is wider but the opening formed by the outermost silicone skirting is shorter top to bottom than the Standard. The interior cushion area that is covered by the skirting is the same length as the Standard – just wider at the top. I have found to control leaks that the forehead piece must be in the straight position (more pressure on the top of the cushion and significantly tighter lower straps (Interestingly, tightening the upper straps doesn’t help much.) The result for me is red and sore areas just below the actual nose bridge and just under my nose.

I had a pretty good length of time invested in dialing in the adjustments on the Standard when I first got it and I think there is a break-in of silicone, even if the makers don’t think there should be (even in contact lenses). I think the Shallow has potential to be very good for me, so, I can keep after it to see if I can make it work (after only a few nights, I’m pretty good at changing cushions back to the Standard at 3:00 AM). Or, I can try excise (is that the right medical word to stay in keeping with the post title?) some of the skirting. Anyone with suggestions, similar experience, guidance?

Thanks

Chris

Guess I'm on my own for this one.

you should have ordered a Large cushion or you can trim that inner flap a bit under your nose with small scissors. Just trim about 1/8" of that flap where it goes under your nose.

don't know what it is, but that mask seems to ride higher after a while then that flap digs into your nares.

Thanks Snoredog! Amazing timing. I got the large at first and found it was a little too large. I still have it and will give it another try. I know little more now about how to fit it. Its good to know the skirting can be trimmed successfully.
