This is a long shot.
There's a certain eye surgery where after the procedure, the patient must keep the eyes facing downwards for maybe 20 hrs a day for maybe 4 or 6 weeks.
So obviously they have to sleep on their stomach and cannot turn their head sideways to breathe.
They make a sleeping thing (technical term) kind of like a bridge with a big hole for your face.
This equipment can be rented or purchased. Look up equipment for vitrectomy. There is a place in Toronto that has this equipment called "know your body best".

If you try other positions. It may or may not work out for you. If you don't try it, it's a certainty it won't work for you. Your doctor absolutely cannot promise you that the position that set this off won't cause it to happen again. Your return to CPAP will be on infinite hold if that's your one deciding factor of whether to use it or not. I think you should eliminate that from the equation. Either you're willing to take the risk and try it again on your stomach, willing to try other positions if adverse to the risk, or willing to forget about seeing if CPAP can help you. Totally on you. Seems to me the only potential influencers at this point are if you see a mask with a significantly different vent or figure a different pillow will make the difference. At the end of those two discussions, there's nothing left but your decision.

In another thread, I recommend an inexpensive face-down pillow. As he has done with every recommendation, it was rejected immediately.

That's pretty cool. Different from what I've seen. KYBB's model sleeps in the usual direction with a ramp to bridge to the height.
I have been tempted to get one because I am fall asleep better on my stomach.
