second night harder than first....

Post by svh » Sat Oct 07, 2006 6:31 am

I don't have numbers yet, since I can't get them from the machine till after noon, but I know this night was not as good as last night. First, my nose is getting sore. Second, I think I had more leaking--I sometimes heard a tiny high-pitched whine, which I assume was a leak. I would fiddle with the mask and it would stop, but it was annoying and didn't happen the first night. Also, the mask seemed v. loud--didn't notice that the first night. Plus, I woke several times and had trouble falling back to sleep (not typical). Grrrr.

I'm just venting. I know this is all par for the course. I had a good first night, though, so I guess I thought I'd be one of the lucky ones who didn't have problems w/ treatment! (Why I would think this, who knows--I am an optimist!)

So, I went from pressure of six to seven last night. I know one night is too little time to make a judgement, but I'm impatient. I may back it up to 6.5, since at 6 I slept fairly well, but still snored (according to DH).

I'll add my numbers on later, when I get them.

For the sore nose use Ayr gel or a very thin layer of chapstick. They soothe the skin and seem to help the nasal pillows 'stick' better.

It took me a couple nights with the Swift to get my nose toughened up. It didn't get really bad (not even bad enough to pull out my Full Face mask for a night) but after a couple more nights you nose most likely won't know the swift is there.

On the high pitched whines. I am starting to think it is from the seal on the nares, not so much any other part of the swift. I too have fiddled around twisting the barrel and tubes and other connections but I find that many times I can stop that whine by reseating the pillow on the nares Also it helps if the pillow is clean (that is basically the only reason I clean my interface every couple of days -- to make it seal bettter) since if you don't clean it it gets greasy and slippery feeling.

Hope some of this works for you.

svh,

I feel for you. I could have written your post on a bad second night. Hopefully we can have a better third night.

Venting is good sometimes. Gets the fustration out then you can go at it again.

I do not snore. My husband says I had a restless night. No kidding. The Comfort curve leaked, I kept holding it onto my face. Air was blowing into my eyes. My one ear is still burning two hours later from where it was touching the headgear. My cheeks tingle from were the chedk pads were making contact. After 6 hours I finally gave up and got up. I will attmpt a nap later and play with the head gear.

Actually I was considering the swift. Did you read the post, were someone was describing rotating the barrel of the swift a bit to get a good seal?

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

I do like the swift, I have to say. I can lie on my side (I only really lie on one side, so that's good), without leaks. When I tried the comfort curve, I had trouble maintaining a seal on my side. I did rotate the barrel last night, and it definitely helps. However, unlike the first night, I had to keep fiddling with it throught the night....

I hope we both have a better night tonight!

PS: All that said, I'm still a bit less tired than I would have been pre-treatment, I think, so that's good!

OK, so for some reason my numbers are on the machine, despite it not being noon yet....

Here they are: my AHI went down to 0.5 (from 1.7), and the leak rate went slightly up to 26.9 (from 24.7). So, I guess the increase in pressure helped. DH reported no snoring this time.

I may try 6.5 for a pressure tonight, since 6 was more comfortable than seven, but slightly less effective.
