what do you do when you have allergies?
Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
I just take a few sniffs of a nasal mist at night. I don't worry about becoming dependent on the stuff, there's periods of time that I don't even use it. Everythings okay in moderation.
Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
Thank you. I am getting there. Thank God for this board (or thank whatever works for you)Bertha deBlues wrote:I wish for you a good night's sleep.lliann wrote:Thank you. Most had good suggestions and actually some I have been doing for a while. I had tried many things for a long time with hit and miss results, like many of you. And I have changed meds many times. I try to take the ones that won't make me drowsy. I have tried so many things this week trying to not mouth breathe, that this flare up of kind knocked me off my pins for one night. Got the simply saline. Got the recipe for homemade too.(ty). I did not want last night to happen and don't want it to happen again.
I have not always embraced the hose life but given my age and newer symptoms I am on board and will be doing the best I can with good help from here.

Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
Thank you for your reasonable response to my less than gracious response. I too have to supplement hormones (growing old is a B**ch) so I will also check the knots in my pantyhose that I don't wear anymore. I will admit I have been non compliant (by any definition) in the past. I am trying to rectify that. But sometimes quickly sometimes slowly. I just keep trying to do better.Goofproof wrote:Funny you bring up Testosterone, I even have to supplement that too. Even though it burns me up like rotten hamburger at times. At least we both know our gender, some are unsure.... Many who need XPAP, do think compliance is the treatment goal, it is not. I set the bar high, because that's where the bar belongs, setting you goals low guarantees low results.lliann wrote:BTW Jim, who knows nothing about me. I work with alcoholics and drug addicts all the time on the word "can't" when in fact can't often means won't. Can't is not a word I use often except when in fact I can't do something. There are times I won't do something. I always know the difference between when I won't and when I can't. Sometimes can't is not being fully resistant. Sometimes its just being less than perfect.Goofproof wrote:"What is your idea on whats compliance, four hours, that's just a number set that they use to allow you to keep trying your machine, it has nothing to do with your success with XPAP treatment. Successful XPAP treatment requires you use your machine correctly every time you sleep or nap! Periodlliann wrote:I have been doing very well on my pap with the DreamWear mask. I would say 3 straight weeks of compliance.
Then last night. I had a tickle in my throat. My nose was stuffy. I keep coughing and needing to get rid of PND (sorry if that tmi but I am going to guess we all run into this?)
I could not keep my mask on (even the small one) because the coughing, blowing and clearing just wreaked havoc with any possible accumulation of data.(I was just one big constant leak) I doubt even a FFM would have handled it because I needed to clear my passages pretty constantly. I did take some benadryl to dry myself up (which explains why I slept in so late today) but I also never got my mask back on.
For long term users, do you also run into nights where you just can't do the pap because your body has other ideas?
>>>>>>>Actually, for now my aim was a minimum of 4 or more hours /30 days +that ins. identified as compliance. My idea of compliance (thanks for asking and not assuming I was suggesting it could only be what an ins. suggests ) is basically what one can eventually learn to accept. In a perfect world all people would do the perfect thing that is perfect for them according to them and all others. In my world, I do what is the best I can do without sabotaging myself into thinking I must do all things perfectly. And I stopped asking others for permission to be imperfect a long time ago.
"On Allergies, Mine are 24/7/7, I am NOT supposed to take OTC med's to help it, But as I have grown use to breathing, I take something before bed, also the filtered air from my XPAP and room A\C (Bedroom 65 degrees year around) gets me thru the night.
>>>>>>>I take allegra per doctors orders. I also supplement with Benadryl with my doctor's permission from many conversations trying to deal with my allergies which often take the form of intense itching. 3 of the allergists suggested I take heavy duty pills like doxepin that turn me into a zombie (yeh I don't itch because I am unconscious) but I 'won't' do that. Childrens Benadryl in a small sip is the least intrusive way I can sleep without scratching or coughing up sputum all night. I did not choose to not put the mask on, however I did fall asleep before I did. Shit happens.
"I am also to smart enough to use a FF mask when and if I need to. Since I'm not supposed to use that type of drugs, I suffer while awake, and take one before bed, usually it works, lately my left ear plugs up, used to take 1\2 hour to get it back, sometimes most of the day. Not a big deal, bigger fish to fry here!
>>>>>>>>>>Congratulations on being smart enough. You might want to work on your arrogance next.

There is too much damn testosterone on this group. You guys need to loosen up the knot you got your shorts tied up in. Don't waste your time talking down to me. I am here for info and help. Not condescension.

And this is exactly why I read this board.
I =do= have an acid reflux diagnosis. I recall a few times of true acid back up (yecccchh and ouch) but I never heard of silent acid reflux (and I really do read up on things). I went right from your post to google and damn, I need to talk to my doctor about this. I think this could totally be a possibility!!!! Thank you so much!

Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
Years ago I blew some kind of Zicam product into my nose and I was in agony for hours later. I don't know what happened or what I affected but I have been very careful putting things in my nose since. One of the reasons why I would not use Flonase as part of my regimen. However, Flonase Sensimist is a totally different thing. You cannot feel the stream because its a mist. Not cheap tho. I also was prescribed a product called Azelastine for PND. It does work and I will use it when its real bad, but it also tastes like a family of dead anything is running down the back of your throat if you sniff too hard (with a deviated septum, there are not many offered speeds of sniffing.Cathyann wrote:I just take a few sniffs of a nasal mist at night. Same here, I took to XPAP like a duck to water, I had no choice 1/3 of a heart left after I found out about Sleep Apnea. Falling asleep driving was my only symptom.
Without XPAP success odd's are 6 months and I'd been shacking hands with the Grim Reaper. It's been 12 years now, he's not rang my doorbell (I unhooked it )
They found mine in the OR, couldn't get the tube in for 20 minutes, my Doctors fasttracked getting me on XPAP. So I didn't resist, too weak to, but again not my style. I wish you every success on getting everything out of XPAP treatment you can, and a long happy life. Jim

Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
If it is just blowing my nose problems, I take chloretrimeton as that is the only allergy medication that actually works for me. I do have to try and remember to do this early enough as it is really hard to keep a mask on if I am blowing my nose every couple minutes.
If I am having coughing fits, I raise my starting pressure from 11 to 13. That allows me to have a coughing fit without feeling like I need to rip the mask off.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
snorting boiling water will *absolutely* make a huge difference.Guest wrote:No reason to pay for saline.
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
16 oz boiling water
snort it out of the palm of your hand.

Re: what do you do when you have allergies?
I am very allergic to Ragweed pollen(it's that time of year again). My first allergy season was terrible. I had one sinus infection after the next, it was horrible.
I discovered the inline bacterial filters: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/generi ... -pack.html
8 hours of triple filtered air it solved my horrible problem. I was surprised all that this filter blocked from me breathing in. I would strongly recommend them.
I wish you well..
