Poor sleep in advanced age is related to pain, which prevents the elderly from sleeping soundly.
It hurts to get old--especially if you sleep on the ground.

I saw a study where there is also a genetic coding within the village aspect to sleep periods. There was nearly always someone awake in the group, being on guard, so to speak. From memory there was only a 10 minute window when there was no one awake.

So, you didn't even have the courtesy to read the article in the OP before commenting.
More research is needed on the subject, Dr. Crittenden said. But there is evidence of a genetic link ...

Brief arousals are an integral component of the sleep process. They increase with other electroencephalographic markers as a function of age.

At 70, I generally wake up when something hurts (arthritis) or I need to wee.
