How often do Upgraded machines come out?

I have been a CPAP user for about 2.5 years. Unfortunately the timing of my first machine was such that the newest "gold standard" machines Airsense 10 and Dreamstation came out not too long after I got my machine, a Phillips SystemOne. My DME gave me a machine that only tracks usage. Another unfortunate situation in that I had no idea what to ask for. Now that I want to take more control of my therapy, I cannot, because my machine can't do it for me. I am planning on buying my own machine (Airsense 10) so I can better monitor how well things are working for me. My question is this: About how long does it take for the "next wave" of machines to come out? I am trying to decide if I should just take the plunge and get the Resmed or wait a bit.

I would just get a used machine if money is an issue. There is no fundamental difference in the algorithms between the current and just previous model, but you don't want a brick any more. You can certainly use your prescription to buy a new machine from any online retailer (or a used one from Secondwindcpap.com). That way you can get full efficacy data without paying the full on price. You want to be sure to get a machine that works with Sleepyhead but that can work with the 560 series as well as the current Respironics and the S9 and the current Airsense models (keep in mind, not all models of these series will provide full efficacy).

Seems like roughly 5 years or so between model changes. We never know though as the manufacturers tend to be real closed lipped about what they have in the works.
Today they might say "what are you talking about" and tomorrow they say "here's the latest and greatest".

Given past history I wouldn't wait if it were me. The chance of there being a significant model change within the next couple of years is slim.
Right now the only new thing on the horizon from ResMed is their new tiny travel size machine and it's not slated for release until early summer.

If you are wanting AirSense 10 make sure it is the Elite or AutoSet model.
They have an AirSense 10 CPAP model which is below the Elite in terms of data recorded and you don't want it.

I lived with a 2009 machine that was a "brick" until it died in 2016. I fell back upon an even older brick from 2005 (which was my backup machine and still is) until my new DreamStation arrived.

I was fine with my old machine, and even looked into getting it repaired. Now I don't know how I lived without my data and without an auto-CPAP.

The day after you get your new one, they hold them off the market until they see your sales receipt. Jim

I don't consider new to mean better, to me it means cheaper made. My machines are over 12 years old, I'm still using machine #1, one used to go plus a new one for backup.

I'll be using my # 1, when your new ones will be id a landfill!

It is important to put your health first.
That said, every machine is a used one after the first night.
You would do well to just get a BETTER machine, not necessarily a newer one.
The brick can be used for travel, back up, or even power drying your hose.

I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to let you know I took your advice and purchased a Dreamstation APAP from Amazon (for a very good price). Should be arriving in the next few days.

The terrific Amazon prices recently, may suggest a newer model is in the works . I recently upgraded from a 560 auto which worked well but was becoming a little noisy. Was anxious to try the Resmed Airsense 10 auto just because of the slightly better reviews it has compared to the Dreamstation and the different algorithm. Never having used a Resmed piqued my curiosity. Tried both for a week and concluded the Dreamstation was slightly more comfortable for my breathing. Pressure and AHI were identical. The itch has been scratched.

To me there is another issue besides the electronics and that is the form factor.

I have a nightstand with essentially a missing drawer. The upper section is nice to put stuff. My wife has an air sense 10 and we put an oval grommet hole in the side facing the bed. What is nice about the air sense 10 is that the reservoir slides out from the side.
My S9 like many other machines has a lid that flips up. This does not work properly in the cubby and I have to keep mine on top of the nightstand taking up valuable space.

I am thinking of upgrading before I kick over to medicare soon but if there is a better form factor me on the horizon it would be great to know.

The cubby might be useful if your cat liked to step on the buttons . . .

I tend to agree with you, at least that's what this type of pricing usually would indicate. Ultimately I decided that 1) All I really care about is that i can have some control over my care with the machine, and with my older machine only being a usage tracker, I simply didn't have that. 2) I travel for work (it's been a lot less lately but that can change) - having my old machine as a travel machine where I am not so concerned about the wear and tear gives me peace of mind. 3) I am almost 3 years into my current machine. I can get a new machine via insurance in a bit over two years is something game changing comes out (which I doubt). Although with a high deductible it may not be a for-sure option to get a new machine.
