Throat feels a little different

Post by bhodge10 » Tue Jun 06, 2017 1:56 pm

Hello everyone, I'm a new user to CPAP, during my sleep study i had 38 apnea events per hour and now that I've been on the Resmed autosense 10 for about 11 days, I'm averaging 1-2 per hour. Anyways, I have OSA and now that I've been on the machine for a short period of time, I'm getting a weird feeling in my throat/upper lungs area. It started a few days ago and wondering if it could just be my body getting used to the machine. I did notice about 5-6 nights ago I had really bad heart burn that I hadn't had in over a couple of years. As a precautionary measure, I have been taking OTC meds to keep it in check at night. Is it possible my body is just getting used to the machine keeping my airwaves open and that the weird sensation is from this adjustment? This feeling doesn't impact my breathing, swallowing or anything. it's just a new sensation I've never had before. Thanks.

That is a possibility. When I began xpap therapy 7 months ago, my resp. tech. alerted me that I would likely experience "a feeling" in my throat--not painful--but a definite sensation. Of course I wondered what she meant, so consciously monitored for it the first few nights. I can't say that it troubled me at all; I just took it to be the effect of the continuous air pressure passing through my upper airway--a new experience for my body. Now several months later, I don't even notice it, even with having slightly raised my pressure settings.

For most people using a xPAP helps to heal and eradicate GERD. Helps mine one hell of a lot - huge improvement in the symptoms.

My throat and lungs were sore or hurt mildly for a week each time I would bump the the pressure up 1cm. This could be what you are experiencing, but it could also be something else.
