2nd night

Post by bairdbeth » Sun Oct 01, 2006 9:01 am

I think I slept more. It will take a while to relearn how to sleep. I am so used to being up and have become a light sleeper. I hope that will change. I put the mask on at 10:45 last night and didn't take it off until 10:00 this morning(I was trying to sleep until noon like I used to do, but mostly just layed there). I remember waking alot still. I think I worry about leaks too much I started the humidifier at 1, but still had a couple of drips. I think I will just leave it off until the humidity drops here. It was about 80% humidity outside last night. I am not uncomfortable with the mask, but it is leving a red mark that is a little tender on one side of the bridge of my nose. Is that normal and will it "toughen up" and not happen as I wear the mask longer? It doesn't hurt when it is on. I tried different adjustments, but it leaks if not snug at the top. I fell more rested today, so that is a plus!

Take heart, 8 or so weeks in I wake up and wonder why I can't scratch my nose till I remeber the mask!

LOL I had that problem last night too! I guess since I reached up to scratch that is a good thing. Maybe it means I am already used to the mask as I forgot it was there!

bairdbeth,

If you turn off the humidifier and use it with waster, you will still get humidity as a cold pass.

I was told by the nurse at the sleep clinic that a pain or wound from an interface should not be ignore or left untreated to "toughen up". Her reasoning is that The pain or red mark may get worse, which then will take longer to heal, and the masks may become more painful.

There are many soultions for mask redness and various types of bandages/covers people have used. Do a search and see if anything helps.

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

I bought a pack of moleskin at CVS and just cut a little piece and stuck it on there. It doesn't appear to stick that well when you look at it, but the pressure against my skin once it was on held it in place just fine. No more red marks!

Thanks! I have used moleskin before at Disney World for hot spots on my feet, so I have some left. I also went out and bought blister bandaids and paper tape. Figured I would cover all my bases! I will try one of them tonight!

For what it is worth:

I've never worn a mask--just used an interface, so I cannot really comment on your mask issues.

It doesn't make any sense to me how the moleskin works, but it certainly seems to be popular. Since it is one-sided, unless you have a particularly crooked face , maybe there is a tighter strap or the mask shifts from putting your face on the pillow?

Maybe you already know, but lying down when adjusting the mask and headgear does wonders.

Here goes on the sleep issues:

Way to go on the time wearing a mask last night!! I'd say, from having read posts on the site, that you are doing very, very well.

It would be my guess that you slept better last night, and did not need to sleep until noon, even though you had before. That is probably why you laid in bed with the mask, etc. and did not sleep. I have cut down from 12-14 hours a night to just over 9 hours.

Six months in, it is still not quite second nature to remember to put on the interface, but once it is on I often forget it is there. Even though there is a tube running down between my eyes, I don't have my glasses on. Maybe because everything is fuzzy, it is easier to forget that it is there. I can read without my glasses and while wearing the interface.. I liken it to using a single-tube (?) microscope with both eyes open. One's brain adapts and only recognizes the interesting parts of the field. (Much easier than squinting one eye for long periods of time.)

Great job, bairdbeth, and keep on keeping on. Wait till you go back to work on Monday--everyone around you had better watch out! You will be like a tornado!
