Melatonin

Post by tina » Wed Mar 02, 2005 2:15 pm

Hi,

I'm a new CPAPer and thrilled to find you all! Your posts have answered nearly all of my questions...certainly a lot more than my doctor!

I've heard that typical sleep medications increase apnea events, but do you know if melatonin also falls into that category? For me, it helps me fall asleep, but doesn't seem to 'drug me out' the way that other meds do.

Thanks!

Tina

Melatonin is produced by the body . Some of us don't have enough so we're sleepless wherever we are. I don't see it hurting. Its not a muscle relaxer. That said i don't know if oral melatonin is usefull . It has to be in the right place at the right time.

I use the Sublingual cherry flavored 1mb tabs that are sold at GNC. Three under the tongue and I am sawing logs in 20 minutes.

I read that melatonin is not toxic at all. Even in huge doses. I am not sure if you are supposed to take melatonin if you suffer from depression.

Better check with the family doctor to make sure.

Regards,

Ted

Just a thought, If you take melatonin wont your body respond by making less of it leaving you in worse shape in the long run ?

From what I've read, as our bodies age, we produce less and less melatonin. This is especially true for women over 40. I don't think adding it will have any affect on the body's ability to produce it. You may want to check with a doctor to be sure.
