Need Your Opinions

Post by confused » Wed Sep 20, 2006 9:19 pm

I was diagnosed with OSA a week ago and am waiting for my Cpap machine. My Aunt is a nurse and let me borrow a pulse ox machine w/data, she said it would be good to monitor myself while waiting for my machine. My oxygen level stayed between 93-96 all night. IF this is true why do I need Cpap, isn't that the most important data??? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated. ALso my heart rate seemed steady between 50-60 all night.

Welcome to our wonderful world.

You might be getting enough oxygen. Are you getting enough rest? Apnea events are like being tickled when you sleep, not enough to bring you to full wakefullness, tho enough to stop you from having deep sleep. Sure the scariest thing is starving your brain of oxygen, but not getting rest is debilitating too. That afternoon drowsiness driving home can be even more hazardous to others health as well as yours.

If your doctor has determined CPAP therapy is what you need, then its the fact you don't go into all levels of sleep and are basically sleep deprived.

Good luck and it really is worth the hassle.

were you sleeping on your side, stomach or in a chair?

you would have most of your OSA events sleeping in the supine position (on your back).

I would request a copy of your PSG report so you can see what they seen to determine your diagnosis.

Obtaining a diagnosis of OSA should be well justified by test results, as that stigma can prevent you from obtaining future health insurance and even prevent you from driving (under right circumstances).

Make SURE you never let your health insurance lapse (get COBRA or HIPPA if at all possible).
