Apnea Might Not Be the Only Problem

Post by Rapunzel111 » Sat Sep 09, 2006 1:27 am

Hi Everyone !
I just wanted to make you all aware of something I just found out.
I have been on CPAP since March and have not had any trouble complying.I still felt tired all of the time so I went to my doctor.Tests revealed that I was borderline diabetic.Evidently high sugar levels will cause a person to be very tired.I started roller skating again to lower my cholesteraol and sugar levels. It worked!Since then, I am no longer borderline diabetic, and thought I would feel better/have more energy.

I went back to the doctor again after a lady almost knocked me down at the roller rink one night,re-injuring an old knee injury.I then found out that I now have early onset Osteoarthritis in my left knee, and an off-center kneecap.(If you have a joint that was injured long ago you are more likely to get this at a younger age)I am only 37 years old.

I asked my doctor why I still feel tired all of the time and he told me that the sleep apnea has a lot to do with it even though I use CPAP every night, but also the Osteoarthritis pain.

If you still are not getting quality sleep,by all means, see your doctor and ask for more tests.

My spirits are still high even though Osteoarthritis has no cure and is a degenerative disease that causes permanent cartilage destruction.
I am facing many many hours of grueling physical therapy and if it doesn't work, surgery.

I still feel invinceable though, and all of you should too.We all have a lot of living to do!
Like I said before here, and I will say again,it's all about ATTITUDE !
Mind over Matter,Baby!

If your Soul is Strong, there is nothing that you cannot overcome.
I thank God I am alive and if I had to choose from a few incurable illnesses
I am glad I got the ones that I have. These will always be viewed by me as minor inconveniences, not Earth Shattering Life Sentances.

Please don't be sad about your apnea. It's just a small bump in the road when you compare it to the troubles that others endure.
As for me,I have a motivation for my physical therapy (wish me luck)
and that is to skate again and feel the wind in my hair.

I will skate again.I may never sleep well again, but I will skate again!
God Bless everyone who comes to this forum & sleep well,My People.

Other factors to consider

You are so right, there can be so many other physical causes for feeling bad yet the apnea gets blamed. Conversely, other illnesses can divert attention away from ineffective cpap treatment. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. A thorough doctor is worth their weight in gold.

You have a refreshing attitude toward this whole thing. Thanks for sharing.

Kathy
