Johnny:

Since you've already blocked AOL users and legitimate AOL users now need to use another ISP, don't spammers do the same thing? you block postings from one ISP, and the spammers find another route to your site?

why is this site so prone to spam? or said differently, what are you doing/not doing that others are not doing/doing?

I've been wondering the same thing. Over at http://www.apneasupport.org , I never see SPAM there.

I don't think Johnny can be blamed for crappy AOL service, I think that Rock falls a little closer to home. Jim

Johnny,

Is what Caroline is saying true, that AOL users are now restricted from being able to post? Is that why no one from the site has answered any of my posts regarding not being able to respond via AOL? I was hoping to get someone from the site to chime in and no one ever did. Would someone now kindly address this allegation, please?

Here I am, trying everything under the sun to fix what I thought was a problem with my computer, and now I find out that it could be the site has made it so I cannot reply via AOL? I would like a definitive answer, PLEASE. It would save me from racking my brain and exhausting a lot of avenues to figure this out.

NEVER MIND...JUST GOT THIS POST IN VIA AOL. THERE GOES THAT THEORY.

admittedly, the AOL theory is my own conclusion. it comes from not being able to post via AOL 99.9% of the time over the last few months. when i complained to cpap.com, whoever answered my query said to delete all my cookies. i did that. it didn't work. i wrote back and asked what else i could do. no response from cpap.com. when i re-read the "i can't post" thread a coupla months ago, it seemed that only AOL users were affected. However, i don't have this problem with AOL on other sites. (occasionally a post from aol sneaks in as allowed.)

i now have a broadband provider (not aol) but use free aol for mail and other stuff. i still usually can't post on cpap com if i come from aol.

so please forgive me if my conclusion is wrong, but that's how i got there.

Even Netzero looks good when compaired to AOL. Am I ever glad for my DSL, Hello World, did somebody turn on the lights? Jim

I can never post from AO-Hell. I've got DSL, so I usually post from my Mozilla Firefox browser. All I can say is that it's a good thing that AO-Hell is now a free service starting Sept, '06, because I would never keep it if I had to pay for it.

I connect via cable modem through my Cable TV provider, but I used to keep AOL with their BYOA (bring your own access) plan which allowed my kids to keep their screen names and me to send in very large files in one email to my office. I have now found other avenues other than AOL that allow me to send in large files in one transmission, too. But it has been brought to my attention that AOL is free if you connect via any other method than by them. All you have to do is go to their keyword "Change Plan" and click once to take advantage of a free AOL account. You keep everything you had before except their tech support, which was always a joke anyway. So I just eliminated their $14.95 per month BYOA fee from my monthly bills.

I do find now that I am able to post here again via AOL sometimes. Then other times I still get that error message. But my last post in this thread did go through via AOL, which is why I added in the red addition at the end.

One time I actually saw a spam and was so happy to click on the delete spam buttom to do my share too. I was shocked when the whole thread disappeared! The thread was perfectly valid but just had one spam message in it. Worried that I had done something wrong, I immediately pm'ed Johnny, who replied that yes, the whole thread disappears until it gets verified then it gets put back minus the spam. I've never seen the thread re-appear so I don't think I'd ever click delete spam again. I know that a thread I had started a while back disappeared so I guess it got a spam in it and was deleted too. How many other valid threads are lost because of this delete spam button?

I'm not saying we should leave the spam there but I wish there was another way rather than completely removing valid threads.

Worry not, France. The thread doesn't really disappear. It merely goes back to its proper place in line before it had been resurrected by spam.

I'm wondering if posting problems are firewall related somehow? If I try to post from work, from behind a corporate firewall, I get an error message about half the time. I aways copy my messages to the clipboard before hitting Send. If it fails, I paste and try again. Usually works the second or third time. This is a guess.

NightHawkeye, so then why did my original post here never get put back? It doesn't really matter since it wasn't really that interesting. But it's gone. I do a search for messages posted by frapilu and my other message are there but that first one isn't.

By the way, thanks for the response. It's good to know that other than my missing thread, other ones get put back.

My guess would be that somebody accidentally hit the Delete Spam button on the first post of the thread rather than the last post of the thread. I caught myself starting to do that today once. I already knew that a thread had spam and in my zeal to delete it, I almost pressed the button on the wrong post. Fortunately, I caught it that time.

Just my theory though. Accidents happen. There has been so much spam recently, that I'm pretty sure some accidents have happened. No big deal really, and certainly not anything for anybody to get overly concerned about.

Bill

Ah, makes sense. I didn't realize that it mattered where you were in the message. Thanks.
