Worked out what not to do!
Worked out what not to do!
My first week last week was a disaster but this week is going really well and getting used to everything. The last few nights I was amazed to find I'm getting over 7 hours sleep a night! The one thing I have noticed is after the 7 hours I wake up feeling great but sometimes I lie there after taking my mask off and talk to the wife and I'll accidently fall asleep again without the mask. I wake up about an hour later and feel like total crap! One example is this morning, I woke at 6am and felt really good, went to the toilet and had a drink of juice, went back to bed and put the mask back on and fell asleep untill 7.30am. Then I woke and accidently fell asleep again without the mask and woke up at 8.50 and basicly
Now feel like crap! Wish i had just got
Out of bed. I think from now on when I wake up I'll just get out of bed and not go back!

It is your body going without the proper amounts of oxygen for that last hour or so that is making you feel like crap. Try to recruit your wife to help you not sleep without the machine. You should be strapped in every time you sleep for maximum effectiveness. She needs to wake you up and tell you to put your mask back on. You need to totally commit to not doing this again.

Re: Worked out what not to do!
Though I never had that problem, I don't take the mask off until I am getting out of bed. Sometimes, I too will lie there for a minute... but I keep the mask on. Good luck on your successful treatment. Looks as all is going well. I took interest in your amazement of 7 hours of sleep. I suspect when you catch up on some of your "sleep debt", you may actually require less sleep.

Given your helpful "feedback", you should be able to easily culture the habit of always masking up.

Re: Worked out what not to do!
In addition to sleeping without the mask, drinking juice and going back to sleep may have contributed to how rotten you feel. What you did was give your body a shot of sugar (that's basically what juice is) without any protein or fat to slow its metabolic effects. That probably shot your blood sugar into thestratosphere and then as you slept your body's own insulin dropped your blood sugar way down. That makes me feel awful! Not to mention bathing your teeth in sugar and acid. If you are not getting up to eat a meal, I'd suggest drinking water when you wake up thirsty and may go back to sleep.

After a few months, this won't be able to happen again. Unless I am really tired, I can't fall asleep without my CPAP. I suspect it is the same for most who have been on CPAP for a while.

Re: Worked out what not to do!
Congratulations! You now know the power of cpap!
It is common for the first few weeks for your body to demand more of that wonderful sleep it hasn't had in decades so it can do maintenance on the system. I slept for 10 hours a night and more on the weekends for the first few weeks. The only thing that got me up on the weekends was the pain in my hips from not moving for 12 hours. It wore off and then I needed less sleep then I did before cpap.

Wow great replys thanks guys! The Juice we have is sugar free squash as I'm on slimming world but could try water
Water instead one thing we've noticed is that my sleep apnea got so bad that I was signed off work since before Xmas as they said I wasn't allowed to drive and plus I was falling asleep at work ( I'm a car mechanic and mot tester) and I work in a rural garage with no public transport, I went back to work this Monday with the promise of being part time (10am to 3.30pm for 3 days a week on light duties) now Monday was fine I did light duties and left bang on 3.30pm. Come Tuesday I'm all of a sudden being given full on repair jobs and had to stay on untill 5.15pm to finish off a car. Come Wednesday (yesterday) there was another big job! I didn't leave untill 5.30pm and they want me back In tomorrow (Friday) to finish off the car as the customer needs it back for the weekend. I went into work last week for a meeting for me to come back to work and there exact words were "we want you to come back slowly and at your own pace doing light duties untill you feel ready to come back for more hours". So one day in and I'm back full on! The problem with this is the first week using cpap was understandly hard but it helped me get used to the "gear" and I think I've made a massive mistake going back to work this week the treatment hours are increasing and going well as I'm so worn out from work it Dosent seem to be making me better.

Re: Worked out what not to do!
It's a cumulative thing. If you continue the therapy as you should, you should start to catch up and feel better, I would think. It is not an overnight thing with everyone. You don't spend years or decades with this condition and not suffer some aftereffects. It takes time for your body to get the required good sleep to regain its equilibrium. So stick with it!
Re: Worked out what not to do!
Spoke to the specialist today and she said I'm doing really well
With the hours but I've got a massive problem with mask leaks. I'm going to see them next week and try on some different masks to see if that helps.

(Note this is a satire site)According to a report published Thursday in the Journal Of Applied Psychology, the act of getting out of bed in the morning dramatically increases the risk of things becoming even worse. “No matter how bad things were upon waking up, the very moment our trial subjects pulled off the covers and stepped out of bed, things spiraled even further downward for them in roughly 92 percent of all cases,” said lead researcher Alison Chaudhary, who added that her research team observed no instances in which rising from one’s bed and beginning to go about one’s day improved things for any of the test
