How does Auto-M measure VSI?

Post by JCraig » Fri Aug 25, 2006 4:44 am

How does the REMStar Auto-M measure VSI (Vibratory Snore Index)? Anyone know? I ask because I had a rather high number last night (49.5!?!?), but all my other numbers were totally good. I do tend to run 7.0 - 19.0 on VSI, but this spike was weird. I'm curious how it measures.

JCraig,

I'm not sure whether it's a "flow" detection or "audio" detection. I really haven't thought about it too much. I concentrate more on my AHI. That 49.5 number you listed is a measly little number compared to some I've generated. (and still had a very low AHI)
Way back last year, Derek posted some information on some tests he'd done to generate false numbers. Bottom like is that different things can affect the snore detection numbers.

What was your AHI on the night you had that spike?

Best wishes,

Den

1.5 which is more or less normal for me, so I'm not worried, just curious, heh.

When my snore is abpve 5, AHI goes up. I think the APAP just lies there on the night stand, listening for you to snore, so it can pour the pressure on. Jim

It doesn't seem to affect my AHI which is why I'm wondering how it's measured.

That's the situation with mine, so I pretty much disregard the SI other than to go "WOW" once in awhile.
In other words, my AHI and SI are separate numbers and don't seem to affect each other. In fact, many/most nights that my SI is high, my AHI is low.

just ignore the snore numbers, mine go up to 120 sometimes. the machine uses a snore monitor control circuit and timer to monitor snores. you would have to read the US patent to understand how it works [page 8 [0094]. The snore monitor circuit has a 1-minute lockout so machine doesn't overtreat.

The Remstar is very sensitive sometimes too sensitive to picking up snores, even moving your hose around will can cause it to trigger a snore hit. Most snores it logs are inaudible. If you have a raspy breathing I think that may even trip it.

Try the EncorePro Help from the menu, it explains a lot of that information.
