newbie: almost freaked out last night

Post by cottontop » Tue Nov 03, 2015 10:50 pm

I have been on cpap for about 2 weeks now trying to get used to the snorkle and hosesI etc. It was about 2:30am and I don't know if I was having a dream or if my hose was all tangled up or what. All I remember was grabbing my hose and giving it a hard pull. I heard the Phillips Remstar Auto A-flex machine hit the floor. I must have held on to the hose because I don't think it was a hard hit. I jumped out of bed almost freaking out thinking it had shattered to pieces. It had landed upside down and was still running. I lost about 3 tablespoons of water on the floor. After examining eveything, there didn't seem to be any damage.
I added a little distilled h2o, turned the machine back on; put my p10 pillow mask on plus chin strap, and tried to go back to sleep. Needless to say, I didn't get very much sleep the rest of the night.
Has any one had something similar happen to them?

Yes, same thing happened when I first started this therapy. I thought it was the end of a very expensive machine. Happily, it wasn't. My machine is on my nightstand and the next day I brought some shelf liner which prevents the machine from moving. Sure, it can still be pulled off the nightstand I guess, but it would be a lot harder to do. Glad your machine is okay. Didn't happen a second time - hope it's the same for you.

There are many, many similar stories in these forum pages. You're lucky you didn't get any water in the machine. In the "old days", they didn't have the technology to prevent that and many machines suffered water damage. Consequently, it became a standard suggestion to have a backup/spare machine.......just in case.
From the beginning, I've used old mouse pads under my machines. But, the rubberized shelf/drawer liner (suggested by "Lucyhere") is definitely another option and has been used by many.

I've gotten lucky like that twice. For those who are beyond active and prone to acting out their dreams, it may be worthwhile to invest in a deterrent such velcro or even a strap to secure the machine. For simple tossing and turning, hose management might suffice.

The hose management referred to here is called a hose hanger. It gets the hose out of the way at night. Do a search for "hose hangers" here. You can rig up your own or buy one.

You need to fix it so you can't pull the machine off the table again.

Tying the hose to the headboard is one way. Putting the machine in a drawer is another way. You may be able to route the hose through something where you can't pull the machine off the table.

If you ever pull it off again, be sure to pick it up with the humidifier down, so that water will drain away from the blower unit rather than into it. You don't want to get water into the blower. Even if it survived the fall, you could easily get water into the blower if you tilt it the wrong way when you pick it up.

I keep my machine in my nightstand drawer. I just open the drawer and pull out my hose/mask and I'm ready for sleep. Machine can't go anywhere. Here's another idea...

I have an old flat coffee table next to my bed that I set my machine on. I pulled it off once and then decided to attach a strip of 3/4 inch thick by 12 inch long piece of scrap hardwood to the edge of the table with some contact adhesive. Now, when and if I pull the machine, all it does is hit the bumper strip and stop... it won't fall off the table unless I really honk on the hose with a super massive pull (luckily I've never done that). I guess over the three years I've been using CPAP I've trained myself to not yank the machine/hose in my sleep.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I have this nightstand. Comes in different colors. I love it. It keeps all my cpap stuff in it and looks great.

The same night stand is available through Mayfair for $50 less. I ordered mine yesterday.
