Newbie to CPAP

Post by shadowfx78 » Mon Oct 26, 2015 2:56 pm

I was recently dx with Obstructive Sleep Apnea after a sleep study. My stats are AHI* = 6.1 NADIR DESATURATION: 85%. I am picking up my CPAP on Wednesday. Dont know what machine I am getting though. Just looking for support as to what the most comfortable mask might be to try first. Im thinking of going with a nasal pillow mask as I am a nose breather while sleeping.

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to read this before you meet with your equipment supplier.
https://maskarrayed.wordpress.com/what- ... me-part-i/

In terms of masks...the least amount of surface area touching the skin usually means least intrusive.
If you can normally breathe through your nose just fine then I think a nasal pillow mask is a good starting point. Minimal "stuff" to annoy a person. Take a look at the mask in my profile...it's about as nothing of a mask as one can get and it is nearly silent in terms of vent noise (which I know you probably don't know what I am talking about but trust me...silent is good).

After reading the link Pugsy gave you.........do NOT accept a machine that is not fully data-capable.

If you have further questions about which ones are or aren't, please feel free to ask.

The Doc usually specs the pressure range and not requiring the machine to be data capable. Most if not all here like the data capable machine so they can monitor their own sleep treatment progress.
Sleeping MUCH better now

I would suggest that you DO get concerned with it. They've been known to substitute non-data-capable models on folks.
Make sure it's the "Autoset" model or the "For Her" model. ( second option is the "Elite"......both are fully data-capable )
There's a plain model that collects no useful data. Don't let them give you that one.

Newer user here as well. I posted this earlier today: viewtopic/t108525/Dreamwear-Mask-and-New-Users.html

Hopefully what I experienced will help you somewhat. The experienced people on this board though will be of great assistance. This forum is an absolute wealth of information.

Pugsy is absolutely correct; the proper mask is essential and the most unobtrusive is what you're going to want. If you didn't try several during your sleep study, I would make sure that your equipment supplier affords you the opportunity to experiment with different masks prior to your purchase.

Good Luck!

I just had a study for dx going to have a titration study in a few weeks for more detailed settings. I definitely want a cpap with auto and data so keeping that in mind when i go to pick mine up. I hope my DME is good in talking with them on the phone they seem pretty on the ball. Well after a bit of research it appears that my DME is a multiple company provider.
