Just Problems started good now not so good
Well first off when I started to wear or use Cpap ResMed Air Sense 10 autoset I slept good but after about two weeks of sleeping less with nose pillows than at first I was sent a full face mask. Reason was trying to stop mouth breathing as I was with nose pillows (note like them better than full face mask) Now it has been a fight back and forth in the process got sinus infection and allergies so just now getting over sinus infection and hoping also allergies. Full face mask mirage Quattro good mask but seems now when I use it my tinnitus goes up some yuck. I never thought that this would be such a challenge to get use to but it is. Feel better yes to some degree when I can get at least five hours with either unit. At first got at least eight to one time nine hours with either now a fight from stat to getting up another yuck. I wonder is this all normal ?? I have adjusted setting from auto climate control to lots of different settings so far have not found just the right one. Last night five hours at 5 on humidity and 60 on tube temp so far that has been the best after sinus infection. Any suggestions from anyone that has been through this and did it get better and does anyone sleep all night long with no problems I wake up to dry mouth guess if I did not have that I would sleep all night less one to two bathroom trips. I am male 71 active outdoors person weight 175-180 so no couch potato. Thanks Larry
Re: Just Problems started good now not so good
most people seem to go through exactly what you are going through. At first you get such a large change from ready to hang it up to getting some sleep is a major step and then you start to get used to sleep again. In creeps all the "little" things like actually needing to be comfortable. It's great that you are making adjustments and looking for your sweet spot, as no Doctor or DME can do that for you.
Also read up on RAMP, pre-ramp starting pressure, EPR settings on your machine-some might also help.
The other thing at a FFM will do is decrease the feel of exhaling into pressure if you are sensitive to that (see EPR if you are). Sometimes people mouth breathe because of this with the nose pillows (I wish I could use them but no I can't)

What mode are you using ( APAP or CPAP ) and what are all of your settings?seeing you wrote:Well first off when I started to wear or use Cpap ResMed Air Sense 10 autoset I slept good but after about two weeks of sleeping less with nose pillows than at first I was sent a full face mask. If you're not using Sleepyhead (or ResScan) software, you need to get it and use it to see what's going on during the night.
Dry mouth is a pretty sure sign of mouth-breathing with any mask. Too much humidity can cause nasal congestion which can be the cause of mouth-breathing. Nasal cleansing before bedtime and lower/cooler humidifier settings can help with that. Training the tongue to stay to the roof of the mouth also helps.

Re: Just Problems started good now not so good
What happened with me is I was snoring and wife said jumping and made a gurgling sound so I went for test had apnea hence now on a cpap machine. It is the auto type from ResMed. Before the test I was sleeping with mouth open so had bottle of water by pillow now still have water by pillow with both nose pillows and full mask. Just trying to figure out settings so if I breath through my mouth into full face mask that I will not wake up with dry mouth. May not be possible but am trying. My thinking is if I can get humidity right the moisture will keep my mouth from drying out maybe not, just do not know. I know you do not want to get it too dry or it dries out nasal passages and then real problems with bleeding nose. Going to try full mask again tonight and try another setting on humidity and see what happens. My question to anyone is the humidity not there to keep mouth breathers from getting dry mouth and to keep nasal passages damp so they do not dry out??

Too much humidity can actually cause more nasal congestion which in turn can cause more mouth-breathing. So, if you're turning up the humidity setting and it isn't helping, try going the other direction (lower humidity setting).seeing yuo wrote:What happened with me is I was snoring and wife said jumping and made a gurgling sound so I went for test had apnea hence now on a cpap machine. You also need to make sure you can breathe through your nose before going to bed, so if you're not already, try doing nasal cleansing. And, not everyone has nose bleeding from lower humidifier settings.

Re: Just Problems started good now not so good
If you are having nasal congestion which may be a factor in causing mouth breathing then it may or may not be related to the humidity setting. Some people need more humidity and some people need less to keep their nasal mucosa happy.
Nasal mucosa react to either too much or not enough by swelling and it's the swelling that can cause congestion and when the nose is congested then we tend to mouth breathe more. This is a highly individualized response and something you will have to just play around with if you are having nasal congestion only when masking up. Den needs minimal added moisture and I would snort water if I could...so there is a wide range of personal preferences.
In general adding humidity was originally designed to help keep the nasal mucosa from drying out too much.
The nasal cavity is smaller than the oral cavity and the humidifier can't always put out enough moisture to hydrate the oral cavity even at maximum humidity setting with a full face mask. So a full face mask with maximum humidity doesn't guarantee relief from dry mouth.
Dry mouth is usually associated with mouth breathing but there are other reasons like some health conditions as well as side effects from some medications.
Also it can take very little mouth breathing to dry out the mouth. I woke up with dry mouth this morning myself (I use a nasal interface mask) and when I looked at the software reports to see just how long I might have been mouth breathing...the leak wasn't nearly as remarkable as my mouth felt and maybe 30 minutes of leak just barely into large leak territory.
Learn about the software that is available you can evaluate leak data so that you aren't guessing about how much mouth breathing you might be doing in terms impacting your overall therapy. 30 minutes is one thing...half the night is another.

Re: Just Problems started good now not so good
Hey fellows I appreciate all the info you are giving and I am trying different setting to maybe make dry mouth less. I wish I could use pillows all the time but I have always before c-pap even when taking a power nap my wife says my jaw drops and mouth is open. I do have a deviated septum I think is what they call it on my left side but can breath through it just not like my right side and at 71 do not plan on an operation. My sister had it done and she said not worth it. Now I flush my nose out each night before I start to bed and I like the full face mask it is easy on my face but still wake up with dry mouth not taking any med's pre bed time. I hope I can figure it out as I do feel better even with not sleeping straight six to eight hours. I get up most nights twice for bath room trip but the dry mouth causes me more problems than those two getting up times. It seems also to make my tinnitus worse but that could be from taking 81 mg aspirin daily every morning. I am blessed do not have many things wrong with me and I thank those of you that tried to help it is appreciate so now for another setting and see how it goes. I am going to figure it out. Thanks again guys for the info. Larry

When I use this it keeps me from having dry mouth all night. Just put a small amount on your tongue and rub it around your gums before bed. It can also be found in local drug stores. http://www.amazon.com/Limited-time-offe ... +mouth+gel Something you might want to try.

Gurgling sound is intermittent. Obviously the problem is associated with humidifier settings but the lack of consistency confuses me.
