CPAP doesn't seem to be making any difference

Post by Ethanator » Thu Oct 01, 2015 11:11 am

Hey all,

I am a new member around here and would like to see if anyone has any useful suggestions on why i'm not seeing the results I would like to see. I just received a CPAP machine two days ago and have used it the past two nights. It is a ResMed AirSense 10 and I am using a ResMed Mirage Quattro mask. I haven't had that much trouble getting to sleep with the mask on or keeping it on through out the night. However, I am simply not sensing a difference in how I feel when I "wake up" or how much sleep I feel I need to get. I have looked at the results the past two nights and they are as follows: Pressure 12.1, Leak 7L/min, AHI 0.5, Total AI 0.2, Central AI 0.1. These numbers seem reasonable, especially my AHI being pretty low, but I am just not seeing any difference. I still feel like I can sleep forever and am still super tired and groggy no matter how long ive slept. I know it has only been a couple of days, but I was under the impression that I would feel at least some difference by now. Thank you all for your help and support.

Two days doesn't seem like much of a test... give it time to help restore your health.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

It can take a month or more for your brain to allow you to sleep deeply. It can take a month to a year for your body to regenerate your damaged organs and feel better.

For many of us we slept MORE for the first few weeks and CRAVED more sleep as our bodies went into over drive reno mode.

It may take a while before you see big changes....First one I noticed when I started using mine was I didn't wake up any more with those massive head aches....felt like some one just ripped my head off and put it back on wrong!!!

My nightly trips to the bathroom pretty much stopped.

Whoever told you that or gave you that impression has no idea what they're talking about. The odds of feeling "immediate" results are astronomical. It happens occasionally, but not normally.

You might fill in your profile with the exact equipment you're using and the settings. You have most of that listed in your post, but it will help if you post in multiple threads......so people won't have to keep asking.

Are you using software to see your data? If not, try "Sleepyhead"......it's a free download.

Ethanator let me ask you a question...
How long have you experienced being tired all the time, not sleeping well, falling asleep watching tv or reading????? Its been a long time hasn't it, well it will take you some time to catch up on that lost sleep (sleep debt) before you begin to feel better. This is rarely an overnight "fix", not getting enough restorative sleep will take a toll on your body and organs and it will take time and good sleep to begin to feel like your old self again. There are a few of us that begin to feel better in a couple of weeks ..... we are the lucky ones , but then there are those that take longer and longer.............................
Its like when you have to take antibiotics for a severe infection...... do you begin to feel better the next day after having taken one dose, no, it takes several days for that antibiotic to take affect. This therapy is similar to that antibiotic, its NOT an overnight fix. Perseverance, and hard work are the keys to GREAT therapy, keep at it and you will reap the benefits soon.
Cheers
Nan

Yeah, would it be nice if we all felt better after 2 days on cpap?

I've been doing this long enough that the sleep center has said "see you next year" and left me on my own. But I still struggle. I still am symptomatic and I have some really bad numbers on occasion. But even the worst night on the cpap is better than before I had it, so I keep on plugging away, trying to find other triggers for the sleep problems and working on those.

I told the sleep center that, while I understand they don't want to freak people out, they do a disservice by not telling people about how difficult it can be to adjust to CPAP and how long it can take for some people to see symptom relief.

Download some of the software talked about here on the board, for your machine, and get some help reading the reports. That will tell you more than anything and will help you to self-adjust your therapy to optimize it.

The AirSense autoset For Her records arousals. You may be having those and not knowing it. Your numbers look good, but you may have arousals that disturb sleep.

AirSense 10 AutoSet FH TRI, ClimateLineAir has the heated hose included.

What were the results of your sleep study.

Did you do a titration - use an APAP (Auto) to know what pressure level you need.

I do not remember my first couple of days in the way of tiredness since I was having mask issues. I do know the early morning fog was not there. Soon the stop going to the bathroom was gone.

Like was mentioned it takes time for a sleep deprived body to get back to function like it should have.

Remember proper sleep hygiene. Get exercise, make sure you eat well and check other medical issues as well.
