Tonight is my first night with my cpap. Do you get used to it? A little history on myself, I'm 28 my cpap setting is
I believe its put 7cm/h2o. My AHI tested at 180 a minute which I know is high considering severe is 30. I just don't know what questions to ask. The numbers just frighten me and this has been difficult to take in. Any Adobe would be appreciated.

Hi. Are you saying you have tried it and don't like it ? I am about to start night 4 and I am getting more and more used to it. I like the nose pillows mask, the pressure feels less with that.

you adapt and you get your machine set right for you and you get the right mask. Please fill out the machine and equipment in your profile, there are many settings that you have access to.
It all depends on what equipment you have. You have found a great forum with some great experienced users.
Do you prefer:
Humid air to breathe?
Warm or cool?
are you comfortable exhaling into pressure or not
do you have trouble falling asleep with the pressure up? If it increased after you were already asleep would you stay asleep?
Does air leak out of your mouth?
Do you feel congested? what about CPAP can make you feel that way?
This is all for the base level equipment, even more settings for advanced users
You can fine tune these machines. Just give us some more to work on and we will jump in and help you along. Remember all forum members get to the forum at different times of the day and night

Are you sure about the ahi number. Ahi is per hour, not minute, but even at 180 events per hour, that would mean that you are having events at least half of every minute. An event must last 10 seconds to count.
I have heard of some people with ahi of 120, but that is the highest I have seen mentioned. Are you sure it wasn't 180 events during the sleep study? I had 273 events in my 2 1/2 hour diagnosis phase with an ahi of 79.
Do you have a copy of your sleep study results?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Yes...we all do get used to this therapy...it's not always easy though.
Some people take to it like a duck to water and others find that it's a struggle but even the struggles can be met and dealt with.

Re: New to cpap and Id like some advice
Some take to it night one, others a little longer. It took me almost a week. I hated it at first, felt claustrophobic, felt like I was suffocating, just miserable to the point I didn't think I was going to be able to do it. Then found this place. Keep coming here for your questions and advice. I'm six weeks in and I'm not only used to it, I like putting the mask on now. I sleep better and I feel the effects. It can take a lot of tweaking to get it all right, but it's worth it. This from someone really close to smashing the thing on the ground at the beginning. Put your equipment in your profile and you'll get specific advice for your machine and mask from people using the same thing. They'll also help you diagnose and fix issues. Get Sleepyhead software as well so you can track progress, identify issues, and fix them. Go to Pugsy's pointers for sleepyhead software instructions. It's the first topic in the main messages section.
