I am a new user to cpap. I had no trouble with my cpap when I was in the sleep study. They did, however give me a sedative when using it the first night. When i got home, I used it and was apparently gulping air because I woke up with my stomach looking nine months pregnant and hurting like crazy. I managed to burp out some and fart out the rest but it took a while. I only had it on about 2 hours. The next two nights the same thing happened so the people that sold me the cpap changed the mask to a smaller mask and called the sleep doctor and reset my pressure to a lower number. I thought things would be fine because I had one night that wasn't too bad. I went on vacation for 8 days without my cpap and came back to the same problem, although not quite as bad. I have lots of air going into my digestive system. It makes me nauseous during the day. I have a mask that goes over my nose and mouth because I often breathe through my mouth. This is very frustrating! I want to use the cpap but now feel worse when I use it. Any suggestions?

Im so glad to hear he is doing better.. I know when I got my brand new machine, it made me sick to my stomach, because of the horrilbe
plastic smell, it was unbearable.. I could not wear it without being nausaus either, so I turned the machine on and left the blower running out
to the window all day, turned it off that night, and did it again the next day... and the smell was gone, then I could wear it.
However the air gulping with my titration test machine upset my tummy too, so the combination was bound to cause a problem.
Im glad things are working out for him now, you must have been worried sick. Good luck!

One thing that occurred to me while reading your posts is that if your son is away at school it's a good excuse to get another sleep doctor who is located where he is attending school. That way he can have direct access to a care provider and hopefully find one that does a better job working with him than the one at home. And, it puts your son in the driver's seat for taking responsibility for his own health care, important for his personal growth and independence.

Hi concerned mom,

I've been a cpap user for 14 months with nasal mask. I just had my first replacement of all head gear and mask, and also felt nauseous all week. I soaked and washed all equipment before use, but it had a weird plastic medicinal smell. I feel better knowing other people are experiencing same symptoms, because most docs do not have apnea, and do not understand. I had the same feelings with new equipment when diagnosed, and now the same sick feelings with new equipment. Very very strange. More research is needed in this field of medicine. Good luck with your son.
