tap pap leaks: am I doing something wrong?

Post by hegel » Wed Sep 16, 2015 8:11 pm

I like my new tap pap--except that it leaks like crazy. With my swift fx I get 0 leaks. For the two nights with the tap pap, I have big numbers on my large leak report. I thought that I had the problem solved when I tugged at the nasal inserts and pulled them around to what seemed to be a solid position. When I start out, I have no leaks. then, as I move around, and when I'm asleep, leaks. Plus, I can hear when the leaks begin. My whole reason for getting this mask was its reputation for being rock solid, especially for restless sleepers like me. I wonder if I'm missing something. Happily insurance was free from cpap.com and I can return this for a refund if I can't solve the leak issues.

Other than that, it's a pretty great mask!

tonight I'm back to my Swift as a control, to see what my leak numbers look like. If anyone can chime in with a good suggestion, I'll try the tap pap again after that.

Play with the angle and the upward push of the part where the nasal pillows are seated.
They are more forgiving with upward pushing that the Swift FX is with that top strap pulling the pillows upwards. Tiny changes though...only takes a little bit.
All this assuming all the leaks are at the pillow area from likely pillow movement. They shouldn't move.

thanks Pugsy, will do. It seems like I can't quite find the right upward angle, but maybe tomorrow night. I just played with it sitting here; seems solid. But it did last night too.

I also had large leak problems with the TapPap, and solved it by using the available headgear.

My experience with the Tap Pap is it has been nearly leak free. Sometimes I have to loosen the screw completely and raise the pillows at nearly a flat level more than an angle. And I have to really tighten that screw after it's in position so that any pull on the hose doesn't move the nosepiece. Hose control helps to prevent tugs. I have slotted nares so my angle wouldn't work for one with more flared nares. I have to position the pillows in the mask nearly vertical rather than slanted. Consider your nose shape as you position everything. You may also want to experiment with pillow size. Oh, and I do not use the headgear.

If you want the headgear and don't have it...don't buy it until you check with me. I am pretty sure that I have an unused headgear for it. When I bought mine it had the headgear included and I never used it.
You can just have it if I still have it. I won't ever need it.

That's very kind Pugsy; I'll take you up on that. Kteague, you may be on to something with tightening the screw. If that solves the problem, I'll offer the headgear on this forum--assuming Pugsy can find it! If her storage system is anything like mine....let's jut say, I should read the Life Transformative Effect of Cleaning Clutter, or whatever it's called. But then I'd lose it in my pile of books...

Hey...I know it is a miracle considering I still can't find my BP monitor (damn it...I know how to find it...go buy another one but crap, I didn't lose a cheap one...I lost one of those expensive suckers)
BUT I FOUND THE HEADGEAR ....It's in little baggy so has been protected from the cats.
