You are not supposed to breathe through your mouth, you lose all the therapy air that is splinting open your throat. If this happens often or you wake up with a dry mouth you will need to get a full face mask.

You will get used to breathing out against the pressure.

You're not supposed to open your mouth while using a nasal mask because, as you've noticed, the air that your cpap blows into your nose to keep your airway open goes out your mouth instead of doing what its supposed to do (keep your airway open to avoid apneas). So your therapy is that much less effective, not working when your mouth is open. If that's something that happens to you, you open your mouth when you're sleeping, you could consider a full face or hybrid or mask. If you want, you could try a chin strap, or maybe even mouth taping, but these don't work for everyone.

A good way see if "mouth-breathing" is affecting your therapy is by looking at your sleep data. Leak data is there, as well as pressure and event data. If you have too much major leakage, your therapy isn't going to be effective. You really don't know what's going when you're sleeping until you look at your sleep data from your cpap.

Parenthetically, you could try positioning your tongue on the roof of your mouth, with the tip of it feeling the ridge on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Opening you mouth with your tongue positioned in that way will stop the flow of air out of your mouth. You could try playing with that, and try training your tongue to just do that when you're resting. That one also doesn't work for everyone...but it's worth playing with *smile*.

For me I am just starting to have an issue with my mouth coming open on and off through out the night. I didn't when I first started but it has gotten bad lately. I am going to try a chin strap. I got the Ruby adjustable and the damn thing is too small! And it said it was the extra large... My head might be big but not that big!! So I am going to have to look at another one.
