Mask Leaks, possible headgear problem?

Post by sleep911 » Mon Sep 07, 2015 11:32 pm

I've been having a terrible time with mask leaks. I wear a quarto air full face mask. Sometimes it leaks at the top but it's usually at the bottom.

It's like I can't get the headgear tight enough. Insurance will only replace headgear once every 6 months.

I don't know if it's stretched out or if it's too big because I have lost 25 more pounds. It's a medium mask and the headgear is gray colored and says res med.

I crank it down as tight as I can, but when I do, the velcro ends up on the neck part because I run out of side strap and it hurts my neck.

Do I need new headgear or smaller headgear?

okay, so I don't use that mask, but I do have the Simplus and it looks very similar. For the Simplus the trick is to NOT tighten it too much, the silicon seal to the face is meant to inflate up to the face and not be crushed against the face. I tighten the strap so that the mask stays in place from friction, just barley. Then I hit the start button and once up to pressure I actually pull out on the mask, just a little, so the silicon gasket inflates and then let go.

I have also found that with this mask and my face I need to pull it down towards my chin a little or it rides up too high and leaks at the top.

I guess the point is don't assume that tighter is better and try different things to get it to fit. All of our faces are different. I even have a beard and can get it to work.
Sleeping MUCH better now

Is the headgear gray on one side and pink on the other? If so that is the small headgear that comes with the Quattro Air for Her and that's the smallest headgear...I think.
You can buy just replacement headgear on places like EBay or Amazon but need to know what size is what color.
Have you watched the fitting videos for your mask? Too tight is counter productive with these masks that need to inflate to keep a seal.

Mine is blue. Maybe I should buy the pink one. I had air leaks all night again.

I'll second PoolQ. Have you tried loosening? I know I've got mine right when that cushion around the mask inflates and kind of pops up a little when the air comes on. It gives a soft, cushiony seal to your face that will have some give for when your face moves. You might be tightening it down too much.

If your headgear is either too loose or too tight, you will experience leaks and other problems.... I started with the Quattro Air, and had leaks up the wazoo until I learned about mask liners. They were a game changer for me! They help immensely with leaks, and if you have strap marks on your cheeks, strap covers help with that. I'm now using the F10 mask, which uses the same cushion. Good source for liners and strap covers is Pad-A-Cheek, http://www.padacheek.com , and another source for liners is RemZzzs, available from many DMEs and at https://www.cpap.com, the sponsors of this forum. I tried both of these liners, and now use the RemZzzs and my own version of RemZzzs made from old t-shirts. I do use the strap covers from P-A-C.

Do look at the fitting videos, they really help... and make sure to lie down while fitting, as your face changes shape due to gravity.

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.
