OT Satellite Internet Service

The only internet service we can get here is satellite internet service and I have Hughesnet and it is just horrible and expensive. Does anyone have or know of any service that works better in rural areas?

How much do you pay for the Hughesnet and what do you get for that price?
Like how much download allotment and speed?

I don't know if it is still around but Blue Sky is satellite internet service.

Last time I looked at it, and I admit that it has been quite a while, Sat internet is only TO you house over the Sat and uses the phone line modem for anything going FROM your house TO the internet. That little sat dish is not large enough to transmit a signal to a Sat.

This could have changed, but I doubt it.

I'm thinking that I recently saw something about Directv offering an Internet service something like that.
I think it was part of a survey they asked me to fill out (online) about their service(s).

Things have changed a lot.
I don't have a land line phone at all. I live out in the country so no cable is offered out here.
I use Dish network for my TV and I also use them for my internet service...no phone lines required at all but I did get an additional little dish on top of the house for the internet when I added the internet to my TV package last winter. Works pretty darn good except during heavy rains but that's to be expected. Often the TV will go out but the internet will remain unless it's a real downpour.

Prior to that I used a WiFi hot spot thing from my cellular phone provider. It was okay but I would lose the connection for no apparent reason more frequently than I liked and then I found out I could get twice the allotment and faster speed for just about the same money from Dish.

Now there are all sorts of packages for internet that just involve a little plug in device. A lot depends on where you live of course.
There's Straight Talk...no contract required and prices aren't any worse than cable or my Dish service.
There's a place called freedompop.com that I used to get coverage for a friend of mine who lived in an area that was iffy and she used Direct TV and they didn't offer internet. Just got a little device that plugs into the computer and it gets satellite internet at 3 G speed which isn't bad at all. In some areas they even do 4 G.

In short...we are no longer tied to phone lines for anything out here in the boonies. I don't have a house phone at all. Anyone I would call is long distance anyway so no sense in paying for that when I can use the cell phone.

Den...Direct TV in our area offers internet only in conjunction with land line phone carriers. It's limited.

I pay about $65 a month and it goes out every time a cloud blows over. I get 250 MBS per day and after that is goes to snails pace and I got knocked off like I did on dial up. You get free download times between 2AM and 6AM. My contract is up with them and I don't want to renew it and have to sign up for another 2 years of crappy service. Now they say I need a new modem and that is why my service is so bad. I pay extra for a service contract but if I need service work I still have to pay for it. I really hate them but I am not wanting to get into another contract of crap. I will try to look up the ones suggested. We don't have anything for the TV. We did have that years ago and it didn't work so well here either. We don't watch much TV so that isn't an issue. Thank you for all the replies.

We lived full time for 12 years in our motor home.
We used a Verizon USB modem (aircard) for internet access. They have 4G speeds now and offer different amounts of data per month with the cost going up as data allowance goes up.
I think they still start with 5 GB per month and then jump to 10 GB. The last time I checked the 5 GB cost was about $50 per month and 10 GB was about $100 per month. They also offer MIFI USB modems that will allow several devices to connect to the internet at the same time - basically an aircard with a built in router.

My wife and I each had a laptop and did a lot of surfing, facebook, and forums. We used over 10 GB per month - with no TV streaming (Netflix for example). That would have used our data allowance very quickly.

Years ago a lot of full timers used Hughes dishes. Some were automatic on the roof installations and many had dishes on tripods that had to be aligned by hand each time they moved.
Nowadays you don't see many satellite internet dishes in use. Too expensive, too slow, and too limited on bandwidth. The used equipment can now be found in many areas where RVers congregate for two or three hundred dollars.
There is some new equipment and faster satellite service out there now but I don't know much about it.

Besides our cable Internet, our phone comes with 4G internet.
Since our phones will work as hot spots, the only limitation is AT&T coverage.
