Need opinion about buying a used Resmed S9 Autoset
Need opinion about buying a used Resmed S9 Autoset
I found a gently used Resmed S9 Autoset for sale on Kijiji in my area. It comes with the H5i humidifier, hose, manuals, new unopened Respironics Comfortgel Blue nasal mask, power supply and carrying case. The manufacturing date is 2011 and the seller has a receipt that says his father (deceased) received the unit on Feb 22, 2012 so it would be less than 2 years old at this point. It was a replacement unit under warranty. I can arrange to go and see it and check it out before buying. Seller is asking $450 for it. One thing I would like to check is the firmware version and also the total number of hours used. I know how to do the former, but not sure of the latter. Can someone help me? I also would like opinions on whether or not this is a good deal.

Total number of run hours is available in the clinical setup menu..short version with how to get there explained here with pictures

Here's the downloadable clinical/provider manual for even more information

I think run hours are shown in either the service menu or configuration menu...don't have the S9 here to check for sure.
I think it is in the area where "erase data" is offered...you would want to do this for sure because it erases the prior user's data so it won't be on the machine (don't forget to erase the SD card too). Erasing the prior user's therapy hours doesn't affect the total run hours of the machine.
Also make sure that "Sleep Quality" is set to "On" and not "usage" so that the machine will write all data to the SD card.
The factory default is for "Usage" and that only writes hours of use and summary data to the SD card and only makes the summary data available at the on screen level.
This video may show exactly where the run hours is shown in the menu. I haven't watched it though.

What are you going to do about masks? Do they require a RX in Canada like the US to be able to purchase?
Remember ResMed bans international shipping from cpap.com of any Resmed products and that includes masks or mask parts.

Re: Need opinion about buying a used Resmed S9 Autoset
Thanks Pugsy. Yes we do require an Rx here for masks, but I will try the mask that the unit comes with and if that doesn't work then my sister has a CPAP Rx so I could probably get one through her. I have the names of 3 of the forum members who sell masks so I could probably get one from them too. I don't have to have the masks shipped internationally since I have can have is shipped to Ogdensburg NY and just bring it over myself. Do you think this is a fairly good deal? I was thinking to offer the seller $350. I could buy this one now, use it until I get my Rx from sleep clinic in November and then use this as a backup.

Re: Need opinion about buying a used Resmed S9 Autoset
Given what I know about Canadian prices for used machines....yes, it's a "fair" deal. That machine here in the US would be around $250 to $300...depending on hours of use. There is some value to getting what you want...when you want it without hassle and in Canada I don't think it is so easy to get APAP capable machine unless you get a script that is specific. So while not a killer steal of a deal it's probably a fair deal considering how difficult it is to even get an APAP machine in Canada and peach of mind with no hassles is worth a lot.
STL Mark has (I think he still has it) the 560 PR S1 machine brand new for $400 and to make it a heated hose capable machine another $75 plus just a little more for international shipping. The 560 would be comparable to the S9 AutoSet. Just mentioning it in case you didn't know.
To be honest...it's a toss up with the 2 brands...both have minor pros and cons.
For Canadian prices though...if you can get the seller to come down a bit the "fair" price would become a better deal.
A lot depends on hours of use...those run hours. Couple of hundred vs couple of thousand makes a difference.
I wouldn't worry so much about the firmware in the S9 as I would hours of use. It's nice to have the more recent firmware but most of the time the average user wouldn't know the difference if you didn't tell them because the firmware number doesn't really alter therapy itself. So the firmware in the machine isn't a deal breaker...nice to have the latest but not that much of a critical issue IMHO.
Sounds like you have the mask issue solved easily.
There is some value in just getting what you want when you want it without the hassle. It's easy enough to come up with a suitable pressure. So if you had your heart set on the S9 AutoSet then get what you have your heart set on...you won't be unhappy that you bought it.
