CMS50E oximeter battery dead :( replacement ??

Post by Uncle_Bob » Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:37 am

My CMS50E Finger pulse oximeter has stopped charging. When i plug it the blue charge light comes on and then goes off in less than a minute, i've tried charging via USB and the DC.
I'm a bit dissapointed as I've only had it about 2 years and used it for about 6-8 nights.

I wondered if anyone has managed to successfully aquire and replace the battery in this oximeter?

Not sure where you live, but you should be able to find a replacement battery easily enough. It is just a 3.7v lithium 600m Ah type used in cell phones, etc. If you have a Battery superstore... like BatteryDepot or BatteriesPlus you should be able to take the old one with you and match it.

If you have the part number of the battery just put it in google and do a search. I'm sure you'll find one on line.

The user's manual just says to replace with a 3.7v lithium battery.... no part # per se. Battery manufacturers all have different numbering systems.... easier to match it with volts, Ah and shape.

Well Uncle Bob, Somebody had to be first! Tracking down the right battery might be a pain. I would assume the protection circuit is built in to the device. I hope you let us know how it goes. I think I will get my extra one out and charge it... or maybe sell it.

Hi Bob
I tried to see if the Manufacturer could be of help Below is their response. I have one suggestion you may try. With NiMh batts if it goes completely dead, sometimes it can be revived by "jump starting" with a charged batt of no greater voltage. Briefly touching +to+ & -to- Then charge as normal. Not sure if it would work with Li batts. but may be worth a try.

Dear Jay,
Have a nice day.
This is Viola Lee from Contec Medical Systems Co., Ltd, and it is my pleasure to offer you my service and our products.
As a manufacturer, it is all right for you to buy the CMS50E battery directly from us. Here are two suggestions for your reference:
1. Buy the battery only
Battery for CMS50E: 10 USD/ piece FOB China
Shipping cost: 20 USD
Total: 30 USD
Since the shipping cost is higher than the battery itself, it is not cost-efficient for you to buy the battery only. So I recommend you to buy another CMS50E, then I would like to give you the battery for free.
2. CMS50E+ battery for free
CMS50E: 90 USD
Battery for CMS50E: free
Shipping cost: 30 USD
Total: 120 USD
Of course, it is upon your final decision. Any question please feel free to let me know, I will try my best to help you.
Best regards,
Viola Lee

I bought my CMS50E from the pulseoxstore so I sent them an email to ask if they can recommend a replacement battery brand/type/model#. I'll let you know what I find out.

I think i had something like this going on, you notice i broke the wires going to the speaker by mistake. The unit displayed some kind of system menu, it looked like it had taken a big boys reset.
The power light stayed on charging for a good 20 mins before an idiot like myself pressed the button which brought up the regular menu and caused the charge light to go out

Interesting info about the replacement costs from the manufacturer.

I have tried googling with all the information printed on the battery and have not got a direct hit on a replacement. I gets hits on the manufacturer and hits on other pouch style 620mAH batteries. But nothing solid.

I will try and get the unit into a batteries plus store sometime this week.

Thant would be great Emilia.
I'm interested in the type of battery as it looks like this needs some work to replace. Some batteries can be very heat sensitive and soldering them could easily destroy them. Some kind of fancy low temp welding may be needed for replacement.

Just to update I've tried Batteries Plus and they have no availability on this battery.

Looks like the my CMS50E is done. I don't think i will be buying anything made by contec again.

I would think a battery meeting these criteria should suffice:
1) Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) type
2) 650 mAh or slightly more (maybe around 1100 mAh or less)
3) built-in charging circuit that works with USB-level voltage (common to MP3 players, GPS, mobile phones, oximeters)
4) physical package equal to or smaller than original (or mount/attach a larger battery package outside casing)
5) wiring leads attached for convenience

So maybe....

Yes. This is just a normal li-ion battery. Any mobilephone or mp3 battery can be used to replace this.

This is the battery manufacturer:

Well, maybe Uncle Bob is better off sticking with a two-lead 3.7 Li-Ion package that can charge using USB-level voltage. I just noticed this one has three leads, so I suspect it might not be as suitable as the two-lead Li-Ion batteries:
Also, the batteries with leads already attached obviate soldering. Just splice and tape at that low-level current rating.

I would be extremely cautious before making any assumptions about the battery. The shape and look, and the 3.7V nominal suggest a Lithium-ion polymer rather than a Lithium-ion and the two have very different charging requirements. The former is also rather explosive, if handled improperly. Here is one that is probably exactly like it: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/40125 ... _Pack.html and this onehttp://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2453467 might work, but the point is, if you can't be sure, do you really want to take the chance?
