EDF Browser as an altnernative to ResScan

Post by Otter » Wed Apr 06, 2011 3:10 pm

I got my QFX this morning, and my S9 should arrive with the UPS truck later today, but ResScan's installer doesn't like my OS (xp pro x64). Not surprisingly, EDF Browser installed without a hitch. Will it show what I need to see to adjust my machine? Is there a better option? I'm looking forward to JediMarks' open source software, so I'm not heartbroken about ResScan. But I am starting from scratch without a sleep study, so I need to be able to see in detail what happens tonight.

It can show you a lot of it, but not nearly as easily as ResScan. To see when events occur, you'll need to convert the discontinuous EVE file to continuous (option under the tools menu).

I don't have an EDF+D to play with, but that looks like just a few clicks. I suppose I'd have to load each file and then add each trace, too, or is there a way to automate that?

Alternatively, I suppose I could run win2k or 98 or something in VirtualBox, but I think I'd need some solid sleep first. I can't say I really like xp x64, but being based on a server OS, at least it's stable.

I'm not real familiar w/ XP Pro but is there an option to run a program in 32 bit mode? If so, that would probably do it. But it really should install OK with XP Pro. The s/w guide has no caveats re: XP other than it needs to be SP2. I have no problems at all installing and running with XP Home.

One of the biggest problems with EDFBrowser is if you have two or more sessions in a night I don't know if there is a way to load both into one window. I haven't found it if there is, but I haven't used EDFBrowser a whole lot either.Resscan is easier to use and does have a lot prettier interface.

There is. Ordinarily, 32 bit programs will just install in C:\Program Files (x86).

The Resscan setup file unpacks and starts the windows installer, but then a generic dialog box tells me that it needs to run under win 98se, me, nt 4.0, 2000, or xp. Then the installer wizard tells me the installation was interrupted and my system was not altered. I tried running the installer in compatibility mode for all of those OS's, but the result was the same except the dialog box with the list of operating systems was not shown.

There is no good reason why anything that will run under all those operating systems should not install under xp x64, but there's a thread on another forum where someone else was having the same problem. If he figured it out, he didn't post. I read that thread a week or so ago, but in my fog I thought he'd succeeded.

I'm not sure EDFB is going to work out either.

Any ideas?

Yes you can. After opening the first file, open the second file. If the the startdate and starttime of the files are correct, the traces of the second session will start where the traces of the first session stop (plus the timegap between the sessions ofcourse).

This all depends on the Timelock settings in the Timesync menu. It should be set to "synchronize absolute time".

To make things even easier, after you choose the signals in EDFbrowser, adjusted the amplitude, changed colors, etc., save the montage.
This way you don't need to make all the adjusments again when you open a new file another time.
You can even bind different montages to the F1 to F8 keys. This way you can easily and quickly apply (different) montages.

It really helps a lot to spend a couple of minutes reading the manual of EDFbrowser
