Intellipap autoadjust and still tired

Post by JunaidM » Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:32 am

Im using a Devilbiss Intellipap autoadjust machine and full face mask. I was expecting to get great results as I was using a fixed pressure machine and was told that the autopap is what I needed but alas! Im still tired. My pressures vary greatly and Im not sure what to do anymore. On one particualr night the machine showed that i had reached a 14.5 pressure and last night it reached 19.5 (19.5??!! weird, since the highest pressure setting on my machine is 20).

Ive tried chaning the default starting pressure from 4 to 8 and then back to 5 but with no notable difference. Ive been using the machine for about three weeks and I get that one could experience 'teething' problems but it should have given me some benefit by now. shouldnt it have? My pressures seems to be all opver the place and I dont know where to set it at. lower? higher?

and also, if Im reaching 19.5 could it mean that I, sometimes, need more than 20? If thats the case, should I get another machine?

at my wits end!!!

Hi Junaid, welcome to the forum!

In order for us to help we need more info.

1. Did you have a sleep study and titration?

2. If so do you have the results and what pressure was prescribed?

3. What kind of mask do you have?

4. Do you have the smartlink module and software? If so what do your leak graphs look like.

5. If you don't have the software, what does the LCD display say your leak %, NRI, EPI etc.

6. Are you aware of the Smartcode and how to use it to get some rudimentary graphs on the web?

The intellipap has been known to "run away" with pressure under certain conditions. Hang in there and I'm sure we can help, but we need more data!

Who told you that???
The vast majority of users do better with straight pressure. With a wide-open pressure range like you're using, the pressure changes are jolting your subconscious all night long and you're not getting restful sleep.

If you don't have the software to see what's happening all night long, you're merely taking shots in the dark or flying blind.

Set your machine in CPAP mode in a fixed pressure for a week or two and adjust from there. Also, get the software, if you don't have it already.
You're a classic example of a new user with an APAP........sleep deprived and "lost", as to what to do.

Hi Deon

1. I had a sleep study and titration. unfortunatley, the sleep lab manager lost my results. She then arranged for a titration at my home me and it showed that I need a pressure of 11. Honestly, I dont think the result was very accurate.
2. I have a full face mask from Devilbiss
3. I dont knwo what a smartlink module is because I dont have the Intellipap very long and am still trying to figure it out. It did come with a CD and I havee looked at some graphs after popping my smart code into the Devilbiss website. Dont understand the graphs at all though.

The rest of your questions are foreign to me as I am still new to the machine.

ok, i just checkeed the graph...last night my EPI was 7 and my NRI was 0.25

my percentile pressure was 19.5, my apnea/hyp index was 9.5 and my exhale puff index was 7.

hope you can assist with the info. Ive provided above

She lost your results..... That's not good. There's a lot of info produced in a sleep study apart from your pressure requirements that can be useful.

Anyway, with a full face mask you should not be getting any EPI's. To me that means you may be having mask leaks. What was your leak data?

I agree with Den. Perhaps you should set the machine to CPAP 11cm and sort out leaks first.

The smartlink module looks like this https://www.cpap.com/productpage/devilb ... n=HeroShot
It plugs into the back of the machine.
