Does Regis Have Sleep Apnea?

Post by roster » Mon Jul 06, 2009 4:32 pm

I think Regis will have a sleep study. They are covering sleep problems every day this week.

From their website:
LIVE with Regis and Kelly - Sleep Week
[ PRINT ]

It's Sleep Week on Live and we're covering some of the most common sleep complaints and solutions with the Director of the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Center for Sleep Medicine, Dr. Nisha Aurora.

Are you sleepy/ tired during the day?
Make sure you're sleeping enough then consider getting an evaluation by a sleep doctor to evaluate for any medical or sleep disorders.

Do you have trouble falling asleep?
Make sure you're engaging in relaxing activities for at least 2 hours before bedtime. Make sure you're not getting into bed too early. If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes, get out of bed and go do something boring or relaxing in dim light and then return to bed when sleepy. Do not get on the computer, watch TV, read engaging material, or do work in bed. Keep a set bedtime and rise time. Avoid caffeine for 12 hours before bedtime. Do not exercise within 4 hours of bedtime and ideally: try exercising 4-6 hours before bedtime. If issues occur for more than 4 weeks – consider and evaluation for a possible sleep/medical disorder. Self treatment is not recommended and can make things worse (especially alcohol!)

Do you have trouble staying asleep?
See above answer- in addition, early morning awakenings can be an indication of underlying mood disorder and might be worth consulting a doctor.

Does your partner complain you're snoring?
Check the frequency (how many times per week) of the snoring and if it varies with position? Does the bed partner notice any problems with breathing or breath holding? Does the snorer have awakenings from gasping/choking? It may help to avoid alcohol and sleeping on your back, but worth considering a sleep study.

Do you like to sleep late and then can't get up in morning?
This is often common in teenagers or people who may have a circadian rhythm problem. This is not always necessary to fix if a person's lifestyle permits this sleep schedule. Consider an evaluation by a sleep specialist. Some therapies try to "reset your clock" with chronotherapy, light therapy, or medications.

Do you need to urinate frequently at night?
This can be nocturia. Consider a medical evaluation for prostate issues or diabetes. If no medical issues exist — then consider a sleep specialist as sleep apnea can be cause as well.

Do you have un-refreshing/restless sleep?
Avoid smoking, alcohol and other stimulants. Consider an assessment by a sleep specialist for intrinsic sleep disorder.

Actually they were discussing Regis' sleep problems a couple of weeks ago. He was wearing a gadget on his forehead at night that was supposed to collect data. When I saw that I emailed to the site, suggesting that he may have sleep apnea and that a sleep study might be a good idea.

Don't know that my email prompted this but I thought he might have sleep apnea when they were doing this. I hope he does have one. He will, hopefully, get treatment if he has sleep apnea or, at least rule it out as a problem.

I actually emailed the show over the winter when Regis was having all those sore throats and complaining about his sleep problems and suggested he needed a sleep study. Good that they finally set it all up and are getting to the bottom of it. Sounds like great minds think alike! Regis is having his sleep study tonight and I'll be watching avidly all week to hear him complain about it!

I don't normally watch this show too closely. Its just on in the background while I do all my morning chores during the Charlie's first nap. But I have to admit to enjoying the banter during the first 20 mins between Reg and Kelly. They are a funny pair. Much funnier than Reg and Kathy Lee ever where, IMHO.

Good deed!

I rarely watch the show, but I will be checking here to see the results of the PSG.

I haven't had a chance to watch yet to see what the results are, but they were supposed to reveal them today. He did complain about the sleep study, just as I expected he would. He says he didn't sleep at all, surprise, surprise!

Regis has been diagnosed with OSA! I just watched the excellent and informative segment with the doctor, who explained his diagnosis and had a cpap machine (looked like a Puritan Bennett) and mask (one was a Swift LT) there to explain what he needs to do.

She explained well that it was a serious but treatable condition.

I can't help but think that he may have avoided bypass surgery a few years ago had he been daignosed a long time ago.

I emailed to thank them for this show, which should help raise awareness of OSA.

Yep.

Regarding the publicity, it is good that millions see a "normal" weight person has sleep apnea. And his neck is small!

I was impressed too! Maybe this will help destroy the "it's a fat person's problem" syndrome. Now, if they'd only added a slim, young woman with her diagnosis, they'd have addressed all the stereotypes that docs and the rest of the world believe that is hampering effective treatment for so many undiagnosed OSA sufferers.

Now if someone would point him to this site, so he could find out the real facts about treatment and the importance of taking control of his own treatment. Jim

Hawthorne, you may be taking over Kelly's spot one of these days! I will also email them to thank them, hope they get lots of feedback about this segment. I myself got 5-6 calls from family/friends today. Regis also complained that he didn't sleep but the Dr stated that he slept 6hrs and had 3 REM sessions. I wonder what User Name Regis will use on this forum??

Imagine that. We'd have a resident celebrity hoser! hehe
I think it'd be worth it for him to call himself a hoser on TV, too. That'd prove he's been here.

I really doubt that he would want to be identified if he came on this site!

It would be helpful for him to come on anyway.

He has always said, on the show, that he knows nothing about computers but his wife, Joy does so I expect it would be her trying to find out about his sleep apnea!

It would be like you and Mike, Dori!

Dori - I wouldn't want Kelly's job even if I would ever be offered such a job! I'm certainly not photogenic!
