Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
I use a Nuance face mask, which is a nasal pillow mask. I love the mask, it is super soft on my face, doesn't leave any strap marks, is minimally invasive and it gives me a good night's sleep. I am new to this mask and have only used it three nights. The only problem I have with it, is that I have a drippy nose for a couple of hours after I wake up. I do use the heated humidifier function, set on 3 (Respironics Dream Station Auto CPAP).
Does anyone have this same experience with a nasal pillow mask? Is this something that my body will adapt to or just a very mild side effect of using a mask the puts heated, wet air up your nostrils?

Re: Nasal pillow mask and a runny nose
I don't know what the heck a "nasala" mask is! It should be "nasal" mask. Pardon my typo! I re-read the body of my post before posting, but didn't check the spelling on my title. I noticed I did a spelling error on another post of mine. This seems to be a pattern!
I don't see a way to edit posts? If there is, will someone point me in the right direction?

My favorite masks are the Nuance and the Airfit P10. Yes, I experienced a bit of runny nose at first, but it went away. More knowledgeable people will be along to offer advice, but I can tell you that for me it was a relief. Before therapy, I often woke with sore, dry nasal passages. You may need to adjust the humidity/heat settings, but I leave that for the members here who know much more than I do. Best of luck to you.Lahree wrote:I use a Nuance face mask, which is a nasal pillow mask. Re: Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
It can happen with any mask...not just nasal pillow.
Google "cpap rhinitis"
Most likely caused by the humidity/moisture in the air.
I don't know if you need more or less humidity. Here's the deal about humidity....some people have nasal mucosa that prefer lots of water and some prefer less to none.
It's another one of those things that comes with the YMMV sticker.
There is no right nor wrong setting.....there is only what works for each individual.
Are you the using the heated hose? The reason I ask is that a humidity level of 3 without the heated hose isn't the same amount of moisture being delivered as with the heated hose.
If no heated hose...that setting of 3 is delivering minimal added moisture and most likely you need more moisture.
You need to play with the humidity settings....increase or decrease until you find what your nose likes.
Don't worry about typos... I actually didn't even notice. We can see through them most of the time.

Re: Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
I find it oddly comforting (or maybe it's not odd, lol) to have the nice, warm air blowing directly into my nasal passages. There is absolutely no air leaking with the mask and I like where the air vents, which is well below my eyes. It's a "cozy mask." The straps are soft anyway, but I use super padded soft straps on top of that.
To answer the question about a heated hose, no I don't use that.
I can put up with some dripping, but if my body adapts to it, even better!

Re: Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
You shouldn't have to put up with a drippy nose.
Play with the settings for humidity just a little bit.
There's no guarantee that you will get used to it and you shouldn't have to.
With the non heated hose the Respironics machines default to a humidification system that uses very little water and adds very little moisture to the air at that setting of 3.
I have used Respironics machines with and without a heated hose. I know what I am talking about here and I also know first hand what happens if the nasal mucosa get unhappy. It's ugly and we shouldn't have to deal with ugly.
I don't know what your nasal mucosa needs or wants but if going by the odds and a survey I took a while back...increase the setting and see if it helps or not. Your nose will let you know what it wants.

Re: Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
I don't know how to activate the heated hose function. I will read the manual and get it figured out. If I can get that on, would I increase or decrease the setting of 3 to get more moisture?Pugsy wrote:You shouldn't have to put up with a drippy nose.

Re: Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
To get more moisture you go higher in the humidifier setting numbers.
Get the manual and read up on your options.
The heated hose itself gives you more customization over the amount of humidity delivered...more control than with a non heated hose. So a heated hose is good for more than just preventing condensation.
Do you have the provider/clinical manual for your machine? If not, get it. There's more information in it that will help you than what is available in the user manual.
Go here and request it if you don't have the provider/clinical manual.

No, I didn't get the clinical/provider manual, just the operating manual for users.

Re: Nasala pillow mask and a runny nose
I frequently wake up with a need to wipe/blow my nose.
In any case, it beats the holy crap out of waking up with a dry, itchy nose.
Especially better than a dry, crusty nose that itches all the rotten DAY.
It is so wrong to be booger mining when you are in your sixties!
