Keep waking up with FFM Simplus - cushion problems

Post by raisedfist » Wed Mar 08, 2017 8:14 am

I have to use rather high bi-level pressures. Specifically: a large pressure support (difference between IPAP - EPAP) in order to ventilate adequately.

I notice that with the Simplus, the mask fit is fine when I fall asleep but I will often wake up with farting noises coming from the cushion, or little micro leaks that i can feel develop. It's as if the mask cushion unseals just a bit in one tiny area of the mask, and then I can feel a bit of a rush of air. My leak levels are actually good, including the 95% value. I never have anything flagged as a large leak.

I've tried loosening the straps a bit but then I get larger leaks so I have to tighten the headgear quite a bit.

I had a long time trying to use nasal pillows mask and that simply wasn't working even with taping my mouth shut.

I tried the new F20 mask from ResMed but it really hurts the bridge of my nose - I tried two different sized cushions. It's also a lot louder than the Simplus.

Should I try a mask liner? I think I had one by pad a cheek but I am honestly a technical moron and couldn't figure out how to apply it properly.

Mask liners help diffuse those tiny little leaks that can be so annoying.
They are tiny and really don't hurt the overall leak rate that much but sure mess with our sleep so they need to be fixed because they are messing with our sleep.

But mask liners can be a bit finicky getting them in place and getting them to stay in place or on the mask cushion depending on which way you go.
You can do a homemade mask liner that just lays on the face between the mask cushion and your face (old T shirt works great) or the flat ones from Remzzz....Padacheek mask liners are designed to be sort of attached to the cushion. I can see how it might be a bit difficult to figure out how to attach it but she usually has some pretty good instructions included with anything she sells. Did you see those instructions?

You can get a free sample of RemZzzs and use them to cut your own if you want. http://www.remzzzs.com/
I personally like the PadAcheek better but the free sample would give you an idea if they will work, if you want to go that way.

I have the exact same problem with my Simplus mask. I have to really tighten it so eliminate these mini leaks. It is, therefore, not very comfortable now.

It's been a while but I couldn't really do it very well even following the instructions. I am going to order a new one and try it out again. As well as get a free sample back of the Remzzz ones just in case.

The Simplus mask is tolerable otherwise, although a bit tight since I have to adjust the headgear quite a bit - but I don't really mind that overall.
