Cyst in sinus cavity?
I was wondering - does anyone know how common it is to have a cyst in the sinus cavity?
I was told today (3/16/15) that I have a cyst in my sinus cavity and my GP will send off a referral to an ENT which will take about 2-3 months for me to see. My GP told me he has one too so I'm thinking this is quite common?
I also like to know if anyone here has experienced getting (a sinus cyst) only AFTER starting xpap treatment.
I had sinus issues before xpap in 2011, but nothing like this. Before xpap I used to get sinus problems once every 4 months, and lasted only a week. (I live in a dry area in Southern California in the IE if that helps).
Now I get them and it seems they come every two or three months. The last infection I had in Dec - lasted for an entire month - I was given two rounds of antibiotics that did not help. The infection did something to my ears where my eustachian tubes felt full of water. (I'm not sure if the cyst contributed to that and I'm sure whenever I do get to see an ENT they will inform me if my cyst can interfere with the eustachian tubes and the drainage).
May be what I'm experiencing is normal age and may be more changes happen in the late 30s/early 40s as compared to being in "perfect health" in the 20s. I must now wash with a nedi pot about once a week. If I use it only once a month - my sinus pressure builds up and then my entire face and upper teeth area starts to hurt.
I initially thought that my CPAP mask was too tight across my face and assumed that was the reason for my face pain. to the point where I was loosening the mask more than normal. Even though it did hurt right where the silicone layed on my face - the sinuses are right there as well. After several weeks I noticed it was only when I had sinus blockage that I experienced face pain during the day.
I'm hoping that I don't need surgery for this . . .I already had surgery in 2012 and 2013 for two unrelated things.

Re: Cyst in sinus cavity?
I just read this
"Nasal polyps may also cause sleep apnea, a condition where a person stops breathing for short periods of time during sleep. In rare and severe cases, nasal polyps can cause physical facial deformities such as the widening of the eyes or enlargement of the nose."
Nasal polyps may also cause sleep apnea? Has anyone else heard of this?

Wish I knew where they got their medical info on that website... never heard of that connection myself and I'd want to research med journals properly before believing it.
Re: Cyst in sinus cavity?
Not familiar with cysts. When I worked in pathology saw quite a few nasal polyps that had been removed. Whether cyst or polyp, these are both things that can increase in size over time, so your progressive troubles would likely have happened whether on CPAP or not. That said, if you feel your nasal mask presses on your sinuses, you might want to consider a nasal pillows style mask while sorting through all this. I wouldn't want any more compromise to an already compromised space. If your mask doesn't press on your sinuses, disregard. But I would take the mask to the ENT appointment so they can determine how it might affect anything they might plan to do. I just wouldn't pull it out until after they have made their assessment of what is wrong. Don't want the mask to become an easy target for blame. Sorry, just a bit jaded here. But they do need full information to factor into their treatment plan.

I've had nasal polyps removed at the same time I had a sinus surgery. I don't think there is any relation to OSA.

I had a lot of infections as well because of a cyst. I went to a ENT doctor to remove it as well to fix my deviated septum which didn't really work.

Yes. I am thinking that the ENT will ask me if I have sleep apnea. I know what you mean tho. I don't want my mask (wisp) to become an easy target either. If my mask does apply pressure on sinuses, it is only the ones under the eyes since the Wisp mask doesn't have anything around the forehead. That's where my pain is (on side of nose along my top teeth and cheek bones when I have sinus infections.kteague wrote:Not familiar with cysts. I'm thinking may be I had a small cyst and it grew since I used to have simple sinus issues in my early 30s (10 years ago) and I had none in my 20s.

Re: Cyst in sinus cavity?
Did you get that somnoplasty, LAUP, or the pillar for that cyst? I'm not familiar with what the name of the surgery is, but it is when they pack your nose. For the cyst did they have to pack your nose? If they did both at the same time I'm thinking the deviated septum surgery -they'd have to pack no matter what else they do. I just don't want to ask for surgery to remove this thing if they have to pack my nose. ugh. I like breathing through my nose. I've done mouth breathing when going to bed when I used to live in Indiana (culture shock from warm Southern California ) and I hated it. So unnatural.ElvishKnight wrote:I had a lot of infections as well because of a cyst. I went to a ENT doctor to remove it as well to fix my deviated septum which didn't really work.

Is this what you are referring to?
If so it's quite common and they come and go
ENT didn't excited about it. Used Flonase for awhile and it reduced it but it has never bothered me
I have sinus problems on occasion but he said unless it's blocking the entire sinus it shouldn't cause to many problems

Yeah my nose was packed. I had problems and had to go back to the doctor early because of problems with the splints. I was not on cpap at the time. It was a nightmare. I really couldn't sleep. My mouth was Super Dry! I would constantly swish with water and spit it out. I'm not sure if the doctor I went to was worth a damn either. My wife says I should try it again.... But if it's anything like that experience I don't know if I can do it again. All I did was wish for death!
