severe mask caused toothpain

Post by mattylovesresmed » Wed Feb 18, 2015 4:19 am

Gday,

I have an S9 autoset and full face qautro mask, the mask chassis and the latex cushion are in good nick but the straps are a frayed mess with the vecro barely holding on one side. I have ordered replacement straps but they'll still take 2 weeks to arrive. I tighten one side of the straps very tight to compensate for the damaged vecro on the other side. Little did I know this was the cause if extremely painfull toothache on the left side if my mouth top and bottom. I tried clove oil to no avail, went to the dentist expecting cavities but the dentist couldnt see a problem so she ordered an xray. She just called me and said that the top and bottom tooth tendons are inflamed from some sort pressure. We put two and two together and figured it out (the mask). The only thing that helps the pain is anti inflammitory drugs but I'm worried about taking them for two weeks straight. Has anybody else had this and have found a pain remedy? The straps should rectify the problem in 2 weeks but i need to get through the incredible pain till then. Thanks for any advice

Hi matty,

Masks can definitely cause dental problems. You might want to do a search of the archives to find related discussions.

Regarding your situation, do I infer correctly you are receiving new headgear in two weeks that hopefully will take care of the problem with the damage velcro and prevent you from having to greatly tighten the straps which is putting pressure on your mouth?

Not sure what are good pain remedies. This is totally anecdotal and not proven by any science but in the past when I had a mysterious heel pain, taking fish oil helped greatly, It is anti inflamatory as an FYI. Might be worth a shot if you don't want to take meds since it has other health benefits? Of course, check with your doctor to be on the safe side.

I hope you feel better soon.

If possible, in the near future, order another headgear to have on hand when this one starts to go bad. Don't wait until the headgear is in such bad shape again.

IMHO, you are probably wearing the wrong mask.
Since the Quattro is causing tooth pain, you need a different mask.
I went from the Mirage Quattro to the Philips-Respironics Comfortgel full face mask,
which was wonderful! (now the Comfortgel Blue full face mask)
I was using a Resmed S9 Autoset at the time, and I did not need to change any settings.
The gel cushion eliminates hard contact on the face.

I was going to say that they're available from amazon so you can get them within a couple days, then I figured with "g'day" the OP might be down under, where I'm not sure they sell those things from amazon...

Find a bit of softish foam, like upholstery foam to do what the stretch in the head strap would do. Figure out exactly how long the strap on the bad side must be to use the foam. Scotch Tape the strap closed. and then finagle the foam to do the work. sorry it may not help at all.
