Autopap and Straight C-Pap

Post by gailzee » Sat Feb 19, 2005 6:34 pm

I think Rested Gal, Wading, SWS, and others who are very informed and smart, should give us all a updated reminder on how AUTOPAP's work, versus straight C-Pap's, it seems that new people log on, and as newbie's we are all confused, scared, wondering what the heck this all means.

Questions for doctors, DME's, RT's, and anyone else.

What is the problem with doc's and RT's with autopap?

I had one DME absolutely REFUSE to even quote me a price on the autopap. I told them ''what for'' because my 420E can be configured either way. They had no answer for that! They said they didn't like the 420E, and when I questioned them, they had NOTHING TO SAY!

Hopefully some sleep doc's, or their staff check out this site and maybe come into the 21st century, re: autopap's. I did not hear any negative comments on my wanting autopap, rather just stony ''ok'' when I demanded either a new scrip be written or called in when I stood firm on my wish for an auto.

My software backs up the perfectly the numbers, that I would have not so far ever ever needed the highest pressure. My numbers were to be set for 4-12, when I got the new scrip for auto, it was 8-14.

Go figure, my software has shaken out that I have not ever exceeded 10.5 pressure to deal with the ap's, hypop's, etc. , thereby proving that for me, for now, the higher pressure numbers would be blown out of the water for now, instead of my sinuses.

IMHO of course....

Gailzee,

I think we've discovered in MelMel's thread (a DME on the forum), that DME's can charge the same for a cpap or an apap, so many won't sell you an apap that costs them more to buy, but gets them no more money from the insurance company.
Sincerely,

Uh oh. You're in for it now. You're excluding all the fine GAY C-PAPs out there. Why do we always exclude these? We talk about straight CPAP, and biPAP....

Liam, who can now look forward to another "You just don't get it" PM.

Liam,

Maybe you should try a gay-pap since the straight-pap doesn't seem to be your thing.

Sure you do. By being "P.C." you're leaving out Mac users, Linux users, and a host of smaller operating systems.

But we've taken this poor topic WAY off course.

Oh, wait, you started the topic. I guess I don't feel quite so bad about it then.

Liam, if he were helmsman of the USS CPAPTALK, we'd be so far off course, we'd be on Mars.

Yeah, I am on my CPM system and I am offended...

Ok, maybe not my cpm system, as they never developed anything web based, but they could have... Speaking of coud haves, just think, if Radio Shack actually knew how to market, we would all be on Trash 80's...

ahhh the good old days...

In a vain and probably doomed attempt to get this thread back on course, Gailzee is right to applaud rested gal, wader, sws and others for their continuing advocation of APAP over CPAP.

I had 3 weeks on CPAP set at 10cm and found it quite difficult to get to sleep (despite the ramp feature) and then to stay asleep. I often woke up with headaches and was aware of frequent mask leaks.

I've now had APAP for 6 or 7 weeks, and what a difference! Easier to get to sleep at low pressure, easier to stay asleep with pressure often much lower than 10cm, and no more headaches.

The data from the machine is quite revealing. 2 nights ago was a fairly typical night, with pressure maxing out at 10cm, but for only 12.5 minutes out of 7.5 hours. Some nights it doesn't get anywhere near that high. Last night I spent nearly 80% of the night at 4cm and 5cm and the top pressure was 8cm for just 1 minute with only 12 minutes at 7cm.

I'm sleeping well, feeling better and now have an AHI of less than 1 most nights. Listen to rested gal, wader & sws - they know more than many so called professional who are anti-APAP.

Thanks littlebaddow,

I'd throw chrisp in there also!

None of us are experts (maybe except for -SWS). We all just know what we like and are convinced it will work just as good for many others.

Glad to hear you agree.

Hey I just do it because its fun . I'm sure no expert. I'll leave that(being an expert) to the more PROlithic Pros out there.

Besides , Sometimes I just like to stir things up a bit.

Right Steve

Cheers,

Chris

Ok, I have some questions. Having read all the post regarding autopap's and how great everyone thinks they are, I have decided I would like to try one. I am on a bi-level with pressure of 18/14 and would really like to get a lower pressure if possible. I called my DME today and asked about an autopap with c/flex, stated that I would like to try one. She said that it was like my bi-level in that it drops to a lower pressure for exhale. I told her that was not what I understood it to be, that it sensed what pressure was needed to open the air way and used ONLY the pressure that was needed at the time. I told her I thought the c/flex addition was the part that dropped the pressure for exhale. Was I correct?

I also ask why I was put on a bi-level if the auto did the same thing and the only answer she could give me was to keep my oxygen level up. Does this make since to you'll or am I missing something.

I need to get my info straight before my next Dr visit in mid March, so I can ask some intelligent questions and know if I am being given the runaround. I have only been on biapap since Feb 3 so am still a green horn.

Thanks
Gilda
