Mouth opening
Mouth opening
I started using the CPAP with nasal pillows several months ago. For a while everything was fine, but after a couple of months I started waking up with my mouth open. I contacted my supplier who recommended a chin strap. The chin strap holds my chin up, but now my lips part and allow air to escape. The only thing that works is to tape my mouth closed, but I didn't think that is wise. In addition to these problems the chin strap irritated my head and caused terrible itching. I've tried the full mask, and have problems with it leaking when my chin drops. Having been unsuccessful in obtaining further help from my supplier I have ceased using the CPAP.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

Re: Mouth opening
Different FFM's allow more or less movement of your mouth. My Quattro Air allows for little mouth movement, but the mask I use most of the time F&P 432 I can yawn and still keep a seal.

Re: Mouth opening
Yes same problem here .... cure is 2 in wide tape across my mouth is the cure for me.
Some say to put it vertical so you can still breath around the tape .... that does not work for me.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Re: Mouth opening
grayghost4, what kind of tape are you using? I'd like for my lips to stay on my face when I pull the tape off in the morning.

Put some non-petrolatum lip balm on your lips before applying the tape.wagne020 wrote:grayghost4, what kind of tape are you using? I'd like for my lips to stay on my face when I pull the tape off in the morning.

Try practicing nose breathing with your tongue behind your top front teeth for a few hours a day, when driving or whenever. It's an acquired muscle pattern if you're lucky.

Re: Mouth opening
TAPING MOUTH'S LIPS
If you tape your mouth’s lips because you want to reduce your mouth air leak and thus improve the XPAP treatment, then you’re likely to invite a Meteorism situation. In such a situation you lock- in extra ingested air in your GI tract. The extra air has no easy way to go and be vented to the atmosphere. You better of keeping your mouth somewhat open to let some trapped air go out to the atmosphere, even if this mouth air leak has some negative effect on the XPAP’s proper treatment. An elastic Chinstrap that allows some mouth opening could solve this problem. “Meteorism”, is a similar medical term to “Aerophagia”, but the latter term is used more often for intestinal air distention resulting postoperatively.
If you are taping your lips to avoid a Dry Mouth condition then the taping don't stop air from entering your mouth from the nose and throat, i.e. from the "back side" (pharynx). Usually, when you swallow your saliva which is generated in the salivary glands around the mouth, and then it is secreted into the mouth and subsequently you swallow it (also during sleep), if your lips are air tight then the air must come in from the back to replace the swallowed saliva's volume. So this air circulation, from the "back side", will dry your mouth in spite of taping your lips. The problem could be to a lesser degree than from an untaped mouth b/c the air from the pharynx is moister. But, it is clear that taping your mouth to completely prevent a Dry Mouth, is impossible. You better off with an elastic Chinstrap which would prevent opening your mouth very wide but would allow some lips opening to let air be breathed from the front. However, using a Chinstrap instead of a full face mask would cause the XPAP's treatment to be negatively affected somewhat depending on the amount of air lost and not controlled by the XPAP.

Did you get this information from a legitimate medical source?avi123 wrote:You better of keeping your mouth somewhat open to let some trapped air go out to the atmosphere, even if this mouth air leak has some negative effect on the XPAP’s proper treatment.
Or is it just something you made up to post here?

Straight up - Avil is a troublemaker and I strongly suggest you don't take his advice... and I believe others will agree. In fact what he said is nonsense.
Re: Mouth opening
I also could not use the chin strap. I broke out in a rash on my skin, and didn't like yet another device on my head. Using that medical, easy-remove tape has worked great. I put it on horizontally, and leave about 1/2 inch free on each end of my mouth. I also find that I naturally put my tongue just behind my upper teeth at the same time. I use lip balm before putting the tape on.

I suspected something like this, but it is good to get multiple confirmation. Thanks.

what does this have to do with your not understanding the basic anatomy of the pharynx?avi123 wrote:see my one year treatment results. Can any of you show a better one?
